AbstractVirtual museums are spaces with varied formats and goals, made up of a collection of digitally arranged, organized and logically arranged objects that use interactivity to entertain and value the visitor's experience. Its development process is shaped by the dynamic interaction between the physical and virtual collections, the real and the built environment, the technologies and resources available, the agents involved and the cultural institutions. In this context, understanding the activities and stages of the process is fundamental for planning, designing and executing the project, as well as identifying problems and suggesting improvements. The present article is the result of a descriptive research that used as a procedure the bibliographical survey and the participatory research. It addresses themes related to the virtual museum, the process, the exhibition design and points out the activities and steps necessary for the development of virtual museums.
