Excessive nitrate leaching represents a potential groundwater contamination. This study was carried out in an experiment area located in the city of Piracicaba/SP-Brazil, on a sandy-clayey loam soil. The objective was to evaluate internal drainage and nitrate leaching at the depth of 0.80 m in a crop succession, using nitrate, for treatments with 60 kg ha -1 and 30 kg N ha -1 applied at seeding, respectively, of which only 3 and 1 kg ha -1 were from the nitrogen fertilizer.

RESUMO Com o objetivo de avaliar a eficiência de utilização do N pela cultura de milho (Zea mays L.), usando-se fertilizanteO milho é uma das culturas mais exigentes em fertilizantes, especialmente os nitrogenados, por isso o suprimento inadequado de nitrogênio (N) é considerado um dos principais fatores limitantes ao seu rendimento de grãos. Segundo HOEFT (2003), a dose, a época e o método e aplicação de fertilizantes nitrogenados têm efeito marcante tanto na produtividade de culturas como no potencial de contaminação dos mananciais de água. As perdas de N podem ser controladas por meio da aplicação parcelada dos adubos nitrogenados, principalmente nos períodos de precipitação elevada (FERNANDES et al., 2006), resultando em uma maior EUN pelas culturas. Além disso, a manutenção do solo com cobertura vegetal é importante porque as plantas constituem o único meio seguro de reciclagem do nitrato. Isso também contribui para que o plantio direto seja uma importante alternativa tecnológica e prática de manejo. Porém, no sistema plantio direto, o conceito de EUN é mais abrangente que no sistema convencional, uma vez que as doses de N são definidas de acordo com o sistema e culturas. Determining the intensity of the water balance components in the control volume of a soil, and consequently defining the most likely periods of occurrence of a water deficit in a crop, is an exercise that requires knowledge about soil, climate and plant factors. This research aimed to evaluate soil water balance components at phenological stages of corn (Zea mays L.) under no-till system, when fertilized with 60, 120, and 180 kg ha -1 of nitrogen. Runoff was not taken into account. Measurements were made for precipitation (P), internal drainage (D) (or capillary rise) at a 0.8 m depth, and water storage variation (Δh) in the soil layer from 0.0-0.80 m; actual evapotranspiration (ET) was considered the unknown quantity of the equation. Corn grain yield was evaluated as well. In general, the soil water balance components were modified by N doses, because the soil had been relatively smaller Δh in treatments involving N application than in the treatment without N, resulting in smaller D values in those treatments, which resulted in greater absorption by the plants and greater ET. As expected, the plant developmental stage II had a higher ET value. RESUMO. Verificouse a influência da semeadura direta, convencional e quatro plantas de cobertura na condutividade hidráulica saturada, infiltração, retenção, armazenamento de água e potencial mátrico em um Latossolo Vermelho de cerrado cultivado com milho, na Unesp de Ilha Solteira, Estado de São Paulo. Utilizouse o delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados, no esquema em faixas com parcelas subdivididas, com 4 blocos. As parcelas foram constituídas pelas plantas de cobertura: Mucuna aterrima, Pennisetum americanum, Crotalaria juncea e Cajanus cajan e área de pousio, e as subparcelas pelos sistemas de semeadura direta (SD) e convencional (SC). Nas camadas de 0,00,10 e 0,100,20 m nas tensões entre 6 e 100 kPa, a SC obteve maior armazenamento de água no solo; apesar da SC (0 0,20 m) apresentar maior armazenamento de água, comparado à SD, o mesmo foi menos eficiente em disponibilizar água às plantas; a SD apresentou maior uniformidade de distribuição de água no perfil do solo. The impact of management on the physical and hydrological attributes of a darkred latosol under cerrado in Selviria, State of Mato Grosso do Sul. This research work studied the influence of notillage, conventional tillage and four ground cover plants on the saturated hydraulic conductivity, infiltration, retention, storage of water and matric potential in a DARKRED LATOSOL under cerrado, cultivated with maize. The study was conducted at Unesp of Ilha Solteira, State of São Paulo. A completely randomized design was used with subdivided parcels (randomized block design), with five treatments and four repetitions. The parcels were constituted of the following ground cover plants: Mucuna aterrima, Pennisetum americanum, Crotalaria juncea, Cajanus cajan and an area of spontaneous vegetation. As for the parcels subdivisions, the systems of soil management implemented were notillage (NT) and conventional tillage (CT). In the layers of 0.00.10 and 0.100.20 m, for tensions between 6 and 100 kPa, the CT system made the soil achieve greater water storage. Although CT (0-0.20 m) presented greater water storage compared to the NT, the same was less efficient in making the stored water available to the plants. The NT presented greater uniformity of water distribution in the profile of the soil.
