Gestão por Competências é um modelo de gestão que visa gerenciar e desenvolver, com excelência, as habilidades técnicas e comportamentais dos indivíduos, identificando os perfis dos funcionários, seus pontos fortes e oportunidades de melhoria, suprindo lacunas e agregando conhecimento. Este artigo tem como objetivo analisar o estado da arte das práticas de gestão por competências na administração pública brasileira entre os anos de 2011 a 2020. Trata-se de uma pesquisa exploratória, do tipo bibliográfica. As buscas se deram na base de dados do google scholar, aplicando-se os seguintes filtros: idioma, recorte temporal, classificar por relevância, pagina em português, incluir citação. Optou-se por artigos com no mínimo 7 citações o que gerou 41 artigos. Foi realizado uma leitura e eliminado os que não tinham relação direta com a temática, restando, portanto, 15 artigos que subsidiaram as análises desta pesquisa. Os resultados evidenciam a importância da GPC na administração pública, através de um ganho estratégico significativo, que impulsiona as instituições, entretanto, traz como contrapontos desafios a serem lapidados para melhor implantação tais como; a conceituação das competências, a dificuldade de diálogo com setor de planejamento e Recursos Humanos, otimização dos gastos com capacitação e melhor avaliação da sua força de trabalho.
