RESUMENThe largest and finest organ in the human body is the skin. Considered one of the most important due to its role in maintaining a self-repairing and protective separation between the internal organs of the body and the outside world. In this sense, when there is a burn accident, the part of the body that is mainly affected is the skin, which can trigger major complications in the other organs. A major burn is defined as a burn that covers 25% or more of the total body surface area, but any injury greater than 10% should be treated similarly. The same methodologies that are used in trauma patients are used in the burned patient. It must be immediately removed from the place where the accident occurred and taken to the emergency room. Once there, objects and clothing are removed from the body except those that are attached to the skin. Prompt assessment is vital and the general approach to a major burn can be extrapolated to the management of any burn. The most significant points are to take an accurate history and to do a detailed examination of the patient and the burn, to ensure that key information is not missed. This article describes the structure of the initial evaluation and covers the detailed evaluation of the surface area, the depth of the burn, and how to calculate the fluid resuscitation formula.
