A partir de um atendimento clínico no qual a contratransferência pareceu demonstrar uma faceta contraditória, levantou-se a seguinte questão: para além de resistência do analista, poderíamos compreendê-la como instrumento clínico? O artigo perfaz uma trajetória histórico-conceitual no sentido de verificar como os autores tradicionais da psicanálise trabalharam com o tema. Inicialmente, as ideias de Freud e de alguns de seus contemporâneos são apresentadas. Depreende-se que a obra freudiana permite uma dupla interpretação: como resistência, a contratransferência deve ser dominada como veículo de comunicação inconsciente e deve ser aproveitada. Ferenczi e Stern, seus contemporâneos, destacaram a existência dessas duas facetas e a possibilidade de manejos clínicos específicos. Em um segundo momento, o artigo apresenta as considerações efetuadas pela segunda geração de psicanalistas. Entre esses, pode-se verificar que autores como Reich e Lacan exacerbam o caráter negativo da contratransferência, entendendo-a exclusivamente como resistência do analista. Por seu turno, autores como Heimann e Winnicott defendem a ideia sobre a possibilidade da contratransferência ser utilizada como via de acesso ao inconsciente de seus pacientes. O presente artigo sugere que Winnicott seja o autor que sustenta a contradição presente na contratransferência de forma mais intensa e mais original. Conclui que, dada a complexidade e a importância do tema, deve-se pesquisar, futuramente, como os autores atuais estão tematizando o assunto, em termos de proposta de entendimento conceitual e de alternativas de manejo clínico.
