IntroductionIn this study we aimed to evaluate the peak cough flow (PCF) in healthy Brazilian subjects.MethodsWe evaluated 484 healthy subjects between 18 and 40 years old. Subjects were seated and oriented were asked to perform a maximal inspiration followed by a quick, short and explosive expiration on the peak flow meter. Three measures were carried out and recorded the average of the three results for each individual.ResultsThe PCF values ranged between 240 and 500 L/min. The PCF values were lower in females than in males. The PCF was inversely proportional to age.ConclusionThe values for Brazilian adult healthy subjects regarding PCF were between 240 and 500 L/min.
RESUMOObjetivo. ABSTRACTObjective. Assess the effectiveness of the respiratory training in patients with the Chiari Type 1 Malformation submitted to a specific respiratory exercises program. Method. Case report type of study, with participation of 2 individuals with the Chiari Type 1 Malformation, submitted to a respiratory training program with PEP Threshold™ from Monday to Friday, twice a day, with three series of ten respirations, with an interval of 1 minute between each series, being evaluated the maximum inspiratory pressure (MIP), maximum expiratory pressure (MEP), peak expiratory flow (PEF) and peak cough flow (PCF). Results. It was possible during the 8 weeks of intervention to obtain an increase of 100% in the PCF, 64,3% in the PEF, 37,5% in the MEP and 71,7% in the MIP in patient 2 while keeping an adequate respiratory pattern as well as increasing in 16,3% the PCF and 42,9% the PEF of patient 1. Conclusion. The respiratory training program proposed for 2 individuals with the Chiari Type 1 Malformation presented itself as an effective intervention strategy to prevent and reestablish the respiratory function associated to the sequel of the malformation and immobility.
