Dentre as diversas dicotomias propostas pelo teórico e cineasta italiano Pior Paolo Pasolini em seu «Empirismo Herege» (1972), a que talvez seja a mais intrigante seria a distinção de lin-signos e im-signos. Os primeiros, signos lingüísticos, seriam as palavras; já os outros, signos visuais, são imagens. Explico: segundo Pasolini, a linguagem literária se baseia em um patrimônio comum de signos, ou seja, há um dicionário finito de palavras, fonte da qual o escritor se serve em seu ato criador. Tratando-se da linguagem cinematográfica, esse acervo não existe. O que há é uma possibilidade infinita, um caos, onde os signos são possibilidades, comunicação onírica, irracionalista. O im-signo é uma imagem significante (cada elemento componente de um quadro) e relaciona-se ao mundo da memória e dos sonhos. O esforço de reconstrução dessa memória é uma série de im-signos (uma seqüência cinematográfica). Opondo signos que possuem uma base comunicativa extremamente elaborada e signos de compreensão rudimentar, chegamos ao signo porta, definido pelo sistema de lin-signos como "Abertura em parede, ao nível do solo ou de um pavimento, para dar entrada ou saída". (FERREIRA, 2004.) Visto que a trajetória do cinema é uma tentativa de estabelecer uma convenção de signos imagísticos, objetiva-se no presente trabalho discutir acerca desse signo como significativo. Presente em distintos filmes em variados contextos, esse elemento apresenta-se carregado de valor semântico, pontuando viradas em enredos, aberturas ou encerramentos, sempre indicando passagens e separando etapas. Em The Wizard Of Oz (EUA, 1939), é por meio de uma porta que Dorothy Gale, personagem vivida por Judy Garland, sai do mundo cinzento de sua fazenda no Kansas e se descobre no maravilhoso mundo technicolor de Oz. Em The Searchers (EUA, 1956), a passagem se dá da escuridão ao brilho solar, das delimitações de uma sala de residência texana à imensidão das áridas terras da região. E é assim que saímos dessa casinha e avistamos, à luz, a chegada do protagonista Ethan Edwards (John Wayne), iniciando a narrativa. Emoldurado pelo umbral, é através da mesma porta que contemplamos o desfecho, como se admirássemos uma pintura em movimento, despedindo-nos do nosso herói, quando a porta se fecha e, de volta à escuridão, o letreiro nos indica o término da empreitada. Mais recentemente, um terceiro exemplo, Coraline (EUA, 2009), nos mostra uma garota que à mesma maneira de Alice e Ofélia, transita entre o passado e o futuro, o mundo dos vivos e o dos mortos, a infância e a vida adulta, e para abrir estas portas, elas deverão todas se provar dignas, pois se alguns portões apresentam trancas e guardiões, é porque trata-se ao mesmo tempo de proibir a entrada no recinto sagrado de forças impuras, maléficas, e de proteger o acesso dos aspirantes que são dele dignos.
