Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) technology has been widely used in forestry surveys in the form of airborne laser scanning (ALS), terrestrial laser scanning (TLS), and mobile laser scanning (MLS). The acquisition of important basic tree parameters (e.g., diameter at breast height and tree position) in forest inventory did not solve the problem of low measurement efficiency or weak GNSS signal under the canopy. A personal laser scanning (PLS) device combined with SLAM technology provides an effective solution for forest inventory under complex conditions with its light weight and flexible mobility. This study proposes a new method for calculating the volume of a cylinder using point cloud data obtained by a PLS device by fitting to a polygonal cylinder to calculate the diameter of the trunk. The point cloud data of tree trunks of different thickness were modeled using different fitting methods. The rate of correct tree trunk detection was 93.3% and the total deviation of the estimations of tree diameter at breast height (DBH) was -1.26 cm. The root mean square errors (RMSEs) of the estimations of the extracted DBH and the tree position were 1.58 cm and 26 cm, respectively. /min for the field survey. The test demonstrated that the PLS device combined with the SLAM algorithm provides an efficient and convenient solution for forest inventory.
Accurate estimation of tree position, diameter at breast height (DBH), and tree height measurements is an important task in forest inventory. Mobile Laser Scanning (MLS) is an important solution. However, the poor global navigation satellite system (GNSS) coverage under the canopy makes the MLS system unable to provide globally-consistent point cloud data, and thus, it cannot accurately estimate the forest attributes. SLAM could be an alternative for solutions dependent on GNSS. In this paper, a mobile phone with RGB-D SLAM was used to estimate tree position, DBH, and tree height in real-time. The main aims of this paper include (1) designing an algorithm to estimate the DBH and position of the tree using the point cloud from the time-of-flight (TOF) camera and camera pose; (2) designing an algorithm to measure tree height using the perspective projection principle of a camera and the camera pose; and (3) showing the measurement results to the observer using augmented reality (AR) technology to allow the observer to intuitively judge the accuracy of the measurement results and re-estimate the measurement results if needed. The device was tested in nine square plots with 12 m sides. The tree position estimations were unbiased and had a root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.12 m in both the x-axis and y-axis directions; the DBH estimations had a 0.33 cm (1.78%) BIAS and a 1.26 cm (6.39%) root mean square error (RMSE); the tree height estimations had a 0.15 m (1.08%) BIAS and a 1.11 m (7.43%) RMSE. The results showed that the mobile phone with RGB-D SLAM is a potential tool for obtaining accurate measurements of tree position, DBH, and tree height.
Reasonable forest fire management measures can effectively reduce the losses caused by forest fires and forest fire driving factors and their impacts are important aspects that should be considered in forest fire management. We used the random forest model and MODIS Global Fire Atlas dataset (2010~2016) to analyse the impacts of climate, topographic, vegetation and socioeconomic variables on forest fire occurrence in six geographical regions in China. The results show clear regional differences in the forest fire driving factors and their impacts in China. Climate variables are the forest fire driving factors in all regions of China, vegetation variable is the forest fire driving factor in all other regions except the Northwest region and topographic variables and socioeconomic variables are only the driving factors of forest fires in a few regions (Northwest and Southwest regions). The model predictive capability is good: the AUC values are between 0.830 and 0.975, and the prediction accuracy is between 70.0% and 91.4%. High fire hazard areas are concentrated in the Northeast region, Southwest region and East China region. This research will aid in providing a national-scale understanding of forest fire driving factors and fire hazard distribution in China and help policymakers to design fire management strategies to reduce potential fire hazards.
Forest biomass reflects the material cycle of forest ecosystems and is an important index to measure changes in forest structure and function. The accurate estimation of forest biomass is the research basis for measuring carbon storage in forest systems, and it is important to better understand the carbon cycle and improve the efficiency of forest policy and management activities. In this study, to achieve an accurate estimation of meso-scale (regional) forest biomass, we used Ninth Beijing Forest Inventory data (FID), Landsat 8 OLI Image data and ALOS-2 PALSAR-2 data to establish different forest types (coniferous forest, mixed forest, and broadleaf forest) of biomass models in Beijing. We assessed the potential of forest inventory, optical (Landsat 8 OLI) and radar (ALOS-2 PALSAR-2) data in estimating and mapping forest biomass. From these data, a wide range of parameters related to forest structure were obtained. Random forest (RF) models were established using these parameters and compared with traditional multiple linear regression (MLR) models. Forest biomass in Beijing was then estimated. The results showed the following: (1) forest inventory data combined with multisource remote sensing data can better fit forest biomass than forest inventory data alone. Among the three forest types, mixed forest has the best fitting model. Forest inventory variables and multisource remote sensing variables can match each other in time and space, capturing almost all spatial variability. (2) The 2016 forest biomass density in Beijing was estimated to be 52.26 Mg ha−1 and ranged from 19.1381–195.66 Mg ha−1. The areas with high biomass were mainly distributed in the north and southwest of Beijing, while the areas with low biomass were mainly distributed in the southeast and central areas of Beijing. (3) The estimates from the RF model are better than those from the MLR model, showing a high R 2 and a low root mean square error (RMSE). The R 2 values of the MLR models of three forest types were greater than 0.5, and RMSEs were less than 15.5 Mg ha−1, The R 2 values of the RF models were higher than 0.6, and the RMSEs were lower than 13.5 Mg ha−1. We conclude that the methods in this paper can help improve the accurate estimation of regional biomass and provide a basis for the planning of relevant forestry decision-making departments.
