Background and AimsSoluble Klotho (S-Klotho) is a protein that has anti-aging properties. Dietary inflammation index (DII) is closely related to various age-related diseases. However, whether DII is related to S-Klotho plasma levels is still controversial. It was the goal of this study to examine the link between DII and S-Klotho in middle-aged and elderly people.MethodsBetween 2007 and 2016, five NHANES cycles were conducted, with 12,315 middle-aged and elderly (aged 40–79) participants having S-Klotho tests and submitting dietary recall data. The inflammatory potential of a diet was determined using the DII. To determine the plasma levels of S-Klotho, we employed a solid-phase sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).ResultsThere was a negative correlation between DII and S-Klotho plasma levels. In the threshold effect analysis model, the breakpoint was DII=1.3, and the negative correlation was more obvious when DII < 1.3 (β = −10.6, p = 0.001). When DII > 1.3, the correlation disappeared (p = 0.355). There may be a threshold saturation effect.ConclusionIn middle-aged and older individuals, there is a negative connection between the pro-inflammatory dietary pattern as evaluated by DII and the plasma level of S-Klotho. Given the rationale for the findings and the study's limitations, the fundamental mechanisms generating inflammation warrant additional exploration.
Melatonin (MT) is an important biologically active hormone that plays a vital role in plant growth and development. In particular, it has been investigated for its roles in abiotic stress management. In this study, pepper seedlings were subjected to low-temperature combined with low-light stress (LL) (15/5°C, 100 μmol m-2s-1) prior to a foliar spray of 200mM MT for 168h to investigate the protective role of MT in pepper seedlings. Our results demonstrated that LL stress negatively affected root growth, and accelerated the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), including H2O2 and O2−, changed the osmolytes contents, and antioxidative system. However, these were reversed by exogenous MT application. MT effectively promoted the root growth as indicated by significant increase in root length, surface area, root volume, tips, forks, and crossings. In addition, MT reduced the burst of ROS and MDA contents induced by LL, enhanced the activities of SOD, CAT, POD, APX, DHAR, and MDHAR resulted by upregulated expressions of CaSOD, CaPOD, CaCAT, CaAPX, CaDHAR, and CaMDHAR, and elevated the contents of AsA and GSH, declined DHA and GSSH contents, which prevented membrane lipid peroxidation and protected plants from oxidative damages under LL stress. Furthermore, seedlings treated with MT released high contents of soluble sugar and soluble protein in leave, which might enhance LL tolerance by maintaining substance biosynthesis and maintaining cellular homeostasis resulted by high levels of osmolytes and carbohydrate in the cytosol. Our current findings confirmed the mitigating potential of MT application for LL stress by promoting pepper root growth, improving antioxidative defense system, ascorbate-glutathione cycle, and osmotic adjustment.
Cadmium (Cd) contamination is a serious global concern that warrants constant attention. Therefore, a hydroponic study was conducted to evaluate the effect of different concentrations (0, 1, 2.5, 5, 10, 15 mg/l) of zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnONPs) on the Cd content in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) under Cd stress conditions. The results showed that Cd stress triggered a decrease in plant biomass, an increase in relative electrolyte conductivity (REC), a decrease in root activity, accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation, and nutrient imbalance. The application of ZnONPs reduced the toxicity symptoms of lettuce seedlings under Cd stress, with the most pronounced effect being observed 2.5 mg/l. ZnONPs promoted the growth of lettuce under Cd stress, mainly in terms of increase in biomass, chlorophyll content, antioxidant enzyme activity, and proline content, as well as reduction in Cd content, malondialdehyde, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in plant tissues. ZnONPs also enhanced the uptake of ions associated with photosynthesis, such as iron, manganese, magnesium, and zinc. In addition, ZnONPs increase the amount of lignin in the roots, which blocks or reduces the entry of Cd into plant tissues.
Background and aimThe Healthy Eating Index (HEI) is a dietary index developed by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) to determine whether a diet adheres to US dietary guidelines. Soluble Klotho (S-Klotho) is a protein with essential anti-aging properties. However, whether HEI is linked to S-Klotho plasma levels is still debatable. This study aimed to assess the association between HEI-2015 and S-Klotho in middle-to-older aged adults in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2007 to 2016.MethodsThe study included 8456 middle-to-older aged (40–79 years old) participants. Multivariate regression models were used to estimate the correlation between HEI-2015 and S-Klotho concentrations. General additive models and two-piece-wise regression models were used to investigate the possible non-linear relationships between HEI-2015 and S-Klotho concentrations. Moreover, a stratified analysis of potential influencing factors was performed.ResultsA positive correlation was observed between HEI-2015 and S-Klotho plasma levels (β = 0.74, 95% CI: 0.21, 1.27, P = 0.0067). According to the two-piece-wise regression, the turning point of HEI-2015 was 45.15. When the range of HEI-2015 was from 0 to 45.15, the relationship between HEI and S-Klotho was insignificant (β = −0.87, 95% CI: −2.47, 0.73, P = 0.2858). However, when the range of HEI-2015 was from 45.15 to 100, HEI-2015 increased by 1 unit, the S-Klotho increased by 1.30 pg/ml (β = 1.30, 95% CI: 0.55, 2.05, P = 0.0007), suggesting a dose-response relationship. Furthermore, the stratified analysis showed that the association between HEI-2015 and S-Klotho concentrations was more significant in people with normal body mass index (P-interaction = 0.0161).ConclusionThere is a dose-response relationship between the HEI-2015 and S-Klotho in the middle-to-older aged adults. This relationship suggests that adherence to healthy dietary patterns may benefit the prevention of aging and health maintenance. The underlying mechanisms require further investigation.
