This study aimed at investigating whether conformity in the experimental setting suggested by Asch was particularly related to American culture and less likely to be replicable elsewhere - e. g. in Portugal - as has been suggested more recently. Thus, Asch's classic conformity and independence experiment was replicated, using women psychology students in a Portuguese university as minority of one, unanimous majority group, and control Ss. The original procedure was re-enacted as similarly as possible using a computer program. Among “critical” Ss 59% conformed at least once, 28% yielded three to twelve times. Among control Ss 27% erred at least once, 3.3% made more than three errors. These differences between critical and control Ss were significant. Thus, recent university students in Portugal showed that the degree of conformity to a unanimous peer-group opinion remains observable. They reported considerable distress under the group pressure.
O método etnográfico permitiu a vivência daquele cotidiano.
The Public Market has established itself as a centenary institution and through tradition has stood out among other retail oulets of the kind in the state´s capital. The research aims at identifying the factors that lead shop-owners´ descendants to succeeding or not their parents in business. The Ethnographic method allowed the acquaintance with that reality. The first generation of traders, that descend from Italian immigrants and came from rural areas in the countryside of the state, has established a network. Although formal education determines the pursuit of another carreer, the son is expected to take over from his father in business. Young male children who have quit school are supposed to start getting familiar with their parents´ workplace at an early age so as to replace their progenitors later. Female children should preferably remain away from the Public Market because it is a male dominant environment. Their insertion only happens if they fail in their careers or become widowed or divorced. The conflicts between parents and children result from generation differences due to the emphasis placed on the "new" by the latter and the attachment to the "old" by the former

Dispositional forgiveness and gratitude among older people Autor(es):Neto, Félix AbstractThis work analysed whether the three factors of forgivingness observed in adults -lasting resentment, sensitivity to circumstances, and unconditional forgiveness -were also present in older people. In addition, it examined whether gratitude accounted for a significant portion of the variance of dispositional forgiveness beyond that of socio-demographic variables. The sample comprised one hundred and nine old people (65 women and 44 men, mean age = 70.3 years). The same three-factor structure that emerged in adults was also evidenced in older people. The expectation of (a) a negative correlation between lasting resentment, and gratitude, and (b) a positive correlation between unconditional forgiveness and gratitude was supported. Furthermore, results showed that gratitude explained a significant amount of variance of lasting resentment, and unconditional forgiveness. Keywords: Forgiveness; Gratitude; Older people; Resentment.A quick look at the handbook edited by Worthington (2005) is enough to demonstrate that, if much research has been performed among adults, by contrast the literature on older people is very scarce. Forgiveness is important to people of all ages; however, it seems that until recently researchers of forgiveness had prioritized college student participants 51 Universidade do Porto
The purpose of this study was to investigate the psychometric characteristics of a 6-item measure to assess loneliness among 109 second-generation adolescent migrants. Analysis supported the validity and reliability of the scale with this sample of acculturating adolescents.
