The mortality rate in patients operated for hip fractures is higher when compared to the mortality rate in patients of the same age group. Because most deaths caused by pulmonary insufficiency occurred in the first 3 months in which patients were not adequately mobilized, the main cause of death might be pulmonary embolism. Abnormal creatinine values might indicate insufficient kidney function as another reason of death. ASA classification is useful for determination of preoperative risk in the elderly patients with hip fractures.
This study aimed to determine the perceptions of teacher candidates and to use the literature circles method to help them to develop a positive attitude towards the profession. Given that the study of literature circles in the national literature is only for a specific area, this study is the first study in which the literature circles are used for a different purpose. The research was carried out with eight teacher candidates who were studying in two different undergraduate programs of a public university in the spring term of the 2018-2019 academic year. Participants were selected by using convenience sampling and purposeful sampling methods. In the study, which was formed by selecting the case study from qualitative research designs, data were analyzed by the content analysis method. Findings from the books and sessions performed within the literature circles show that the process has a positive effect on the teacher candidates’ perspectives.
This study aims to examine the effect of interactive reading activities on storytelling skills. A quasi-experimental design with pre-test post-test control group was used in the research. The research was carried out with 49 third-grade students in a public school in Şanlıurfa. The data of the study were obtained by means of a voice recorder during the process of reading aloud a picture book, which has the characteristics of a silent book, by the students in the experimental and control group via storytelling method. The implementation process of the research lasted for 12 weeks and a total of 18 children's picture books were used within the scope of interactive reading studies. According to the results obtained in line with the analysis of the data, there was no significant difference between the experimental and control groups in terms such as the number of words, word diversity and sentence meaning unit in the pre-test narrations structured by the students with the storytelling method, while there was a significant difference in the post-test storytelling scores in favour of the students within the experimental group. In line with the results obtained at the end of the research and the literature, it was concluded that interactive reading studies contributed to the development of expressive language skills in children and increased their vocabulary.
This correlational study aimed to explore the relations of background knowledge, automaticity (rate), prosody, and strategy use with reading comprehension (KAPS model of reading comprehension) in the written Turkish language context with 207 fourth grade students. Successful comprehension requires readers to make meaning out of what they read. Our KAPS model of reading comprehension hypothesizes relations of background knowledge, fluency components (rate and prosody), and strategy use with reading comprehension components (literal and deep) in the Turkish language and addresses the direct effects of these predictors on the reading comprehension of fourth grade students. The results showed that, whereas fluency and strategy use made statistically significant contributions to reading comprehension, background knowledge did not. Based on the results, the study affirms the importance of automaticity in word recognition, prosody, and comprehension strategies in contributing to reading comprehension in Turkish and, as such, should be given priority for literacy instruction in Turkish.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
