Descriptive research design was employed for the study. The population of the study was the registered users of the library for 2016/2017 academic session. Availability sampling technique was used for the study. In this case only the students library user that were available in the library as at the time of this research were used for the study. Questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. A total of two hundred and seventy six (276) copies of questionnaire were administered and two hundred and thirty four (234) copies were retrieved from the respondents. The data gathered through the questionnaire were analyzed through the use of frequency count and simple percentage. According to the findings the respondents agreed to the availability of all the listed resources in the questionnaire. Majority of the respondents use the library information resources for the purpose of obtaining general information, for examination, for assignment and for research. The findings also revealed that majority of the respondents use the library information resources occasionally, while textbooks were found to be the most utilized library resources by the respondents. As revealed in the findings, only few respondents indicated that they were having challenges in their utilization of library information resources.
The study determines the extent of use of information resources provided in Rufus Giwa Polytechnic Library, Owo, Nigeria by the students. The research design is descriptive design survey. The study utilises structured questionnaire to obtain data. The population of the students is 6,550 and sample size of 1050 was chosen as the participants. A purposive sampling technique was adopted. A total of 1,020 copies of questionnaire from 1050 administered were returned and correctly filled, which produce returned rate of 97.14%. Data extracted were analysed using descriptive statistics. The findings revealed that more than half of the participants always use library. Majority of the participants visit library to use social media (84.02%), 83.91% use it to consult library books, while 83.83% use it to do various assignments. The results revealed that 82.94% of the students preferred using textbooks, followed by 80.39% using social media networked and 72.89% use their lecture notes. It was observed that inadequate current textbooks, poor Internet connectivity and frequent power outages are the leading challenges encounter while using information resources available in the library. The result of this findings show that with the information resources available in RUGIPO library, the library is not fully utilized by the students. Based on the findings, it is recommended that more current and up-to-date journals need to be acquired. There should also be a solid policy and implementation framework by the Executive arms of government towards making poor Internet connectivity become a thing of the past in all tertiary institutions in Nigeria and other parts of Africa.
Purpose -The study aims to investigate the use of cybercafé for internet access by students of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach -Using descriptive design, 382 copies of a structured questionnaire were administered to students of the Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, who were using the institution cybercafé as at the time of the study. Findings -The findings revealed that 75 percent of the male students make use of the cybercafé compared with their female colleagues, while the majority strongly agreed that they use it for research purposes. Google and Yahoo were the leading search engines used to explore resources, while the students acquired internet search knowledge and skills through teaching themselves followed by computer training programmes. It was also discovered that irregular electricity supply was the leading problem faced while using the cybercafé by the students, among others. Originality/value -The paper contains an extensive study on the use of cybercafé in an academic environment in Nigeria, which will help in improving the internet access of students of tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
The study surveyed the use of e-journals by academic staff of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo, Ondo State, Nigeria. Questionnaire was designed to gather information on the use of e-journals by the academic staff. Data gathered from the respondents were analyzed through the use of frequency table and percentage. From the analysis, it was discovered that all the academic staff use e-journals and it is used for different academic purposes. All the academic staff agrees to the use of e-journals for research purpose. It was also observed from the findings that most of the academic staff uses e-journals occasionally. The advantages derived from the use of e-journals were also revealed in the study. These include good source of information, currency and timeliness of information, ease of access, ease of storage and time saving. The study also identified some problems encountered by the academic staff while accessing e-journals. Among these problems were slow internet connectivity, frequent power outage and high cost of journal subscription. Recommendations were therefore given, this include increase of internet bandwidth, reduction in prize of articles on e-journals, payment of subscription fee for e-journals by the management of the institution and making it available to their academic staff.
