The tunneling conductance 6 ( V, x,y) is mapped with 5 A resolution on cleaved a-b planes of Bi2Sr&CaCu&O, "crystals (T, =90 K) using scanning (vacuum) tunneling spectroscopy at 4.2 K. A strong, spatially varying 6 ( V, x,y), evidently arising from a superconducting gap 5" is observed on the a-b plane. A more highly peaked 6( V) with reduced peak spacing is seen near (-50 A) specific sites, and over broader areas. It is suggested that the striking variations in 6( V, x,y) probably indicate local variations in BiO-layer metallicity, revealing an internal superconducting proximity e6'ect between BiO and Cu02 layers.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
