This paper presents a newly designed curriculum model for the computer information systems. It first reviews the history of profession and certifications. It then addresses the characteristics and categories of information technology certifications recognized by industries. The curriculums recommended by ACM and IEEE are reviewed to define core courses for Computer Information System program. Several technology oriented programs at different levels of educational institutions are also evaluated and discussed. Finally a three-step curriculum model is introduced for a Computer Information System Associate Degree program. This three-step curriculum model first connects the undergraduate general study and computer core courses to build students a foundation in information technology. Other computer related courses are then grouped into several small focus programs. The last step of the three step program is designed to bridge students from this academic program to specialized training programs usually offered by a certified training and test center. Ultimately this three-step curriculum model is designed for students to achieve their academic goals and start their preparations for information technology certifications in a two-year associate degree program.
With the advancement of air transport industry, airline travelling is becoming increasingly prevalent in recent years. Flight delay, however, has been a headache and costly issue for both air companies and travelers, leading to inconvenience in our daily life. We can't help asking: what's the major cause for flight delay? In this paper, visualization and multiple linear regression are implemented based on Chinese flight data. Temperature, previous delay rate, month and weekday are figured out as influential factors. Further improvements are made by extracting variables to explore the optimal regression mathematical model. Then, machine learning algorithms are introduced to make future predictions.
Engineering programs in China generally focus on development of student's ability in learning mathematics and engineering theories with limited exposures to their practical skill development. Recent research finds that lack of soft skill training on human communication may severely affect student's ability in conveying their thoughts and proposing solutions and even have negative impacts on their professional achievements. This course development research is a new addition to a curriculum development research by the author. The research identifies Chinese student's weaknesses and discovers that successful experience from American engineering education programs can be used as a remedy. The solution is to integrate successful teaching delivery methods from American engineering curricula into Chinese engineering curricula. The research first addresses importance of communication in modern work place and professional career and concludes communication training is crucial in any engineering program. A number of new student learning methods and team activities are selected for a comprehensive course framework. The modifications to existing software engineering project management course contents are made mainly to develop student's communication skills. Another task is to conduct an experiment on feasibility of integrating communication training into the project management course. The research develops a plan to test whether or not the new methods and activities are effective to develop Chinese student's soft skills in general and particularly improve their practical communication skills in the course. Students are required to go through a variety of new team activities and complete newly designed team oriented project assignments with the new focus on developing student's communication skills. Throughout the course student survey and other course evaluations are conducted. Data from the survey and evaluations is then collected and analyzed with help of statistical methods and software to discover scientific outcomes. The data analysis results are used to evaluate student learning outcomes and measure effectiveness of new teaching methods and student learning activities in this new course framework. The results have confirmed that most of goals of this change have been reached.
The Microsoft Office Specialist Certification becomes the global standard of certification recognizing a high level of proficiency in office desktop computing skills. Microsoft Office Specialist Certification has been created to help employees and employment seekers to prove with confidence that they have achieved a high level of proficiency in using other Microsoft Office software tools which Microsoft endorses. It is the only office software certification that is recognized and endorsed by Microsoft and many employers worldwide. This paper first addresses the importance and benefits to get Microsoft Office Specialist Certification today. It lists the major components of Microsoft Office Specialist Certification and analyzes the required technology skill sets for Microsoft Office Specialist Certification exam. It indicates that those skill sets can be broken into three major components, Microsoft Windows operating systems, Microsoft Office Suite software and Microsoft Office Suite software integration. After studying many Microsoft Office Specialist training programs offered by either traditional colleges or professional training centers it is clear that these three major components can be integrated into an existing academic program. The study presents a comprehensive approach to integrate these three components into an existing Computer Information Systems (CIS) program. The goal of curriculum improvement is to help students gain and improve their practical technical skills while they are still able to earn their academic credits.
