Biogeosciences and Forestry Biogeosciences and ForestryMethod for the analysis of the relationship between forest cover and streamflow in watersheds Fabrina Teixeira Ferraz (1) , Sidney Sara Zanetti (2) , Roberto Avelino Cecílio (2) , Dulcinéia de Carvalho (1) , Francielle Rodrigues de Oliveira (2) The relationship between forest cover and streamflow of watersheds is complex and still controversial in the scientific literature. To investigate such relationship we propose an alternative method which requires the following information for each watershed: percentage of forest cover, annual rainfall, average specific streamflow (qave), and minimum mean specific streamflow in seven consecutive days (q7). As a case study, we analyzed a dataset composed by 25 watersheds located in the Espírito Santo State (ESS), Brazil. We conducted simple and multiple linear regression analyses as well as partial correlation analysis between the above parameters. To reduce the effect of heterogeneity of environmental factors, watersheds with similar characteristics in term of rainfall, drainage area, and both rainfall and drainage area were grouped by cluster analysis, and the above regression and correlation analysis was repeated on each group. Our results using the whole dataset showed that forest cover has a negative relationship with watershed streamflow. The analysis of homogeneous groups of watersheds showed that the average minimum streamflow during seven days (q7) was more sensitive to the presence of forest cover, showing a negative relationship, especially in watersheds with low annual rainfall, while in areas with high precipitation, the annual rainfall showed a strong influence on the hydrological responses of watersheds, masking the effect of forest cover. The proposed method may be easily extended to other areas, and allows the inclusion of other relevant environmental variables according to specific cases.
AbstractThe expansion of agricultural and pasture frontier in the Brazilian Cerrado has already led to the loss of 46% of its original vegetation cover since the beginning of the 1980sThis fact caused significant fragmentation of the natural landscape, being the region of MATOPIBA (Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí and Bahia states) directly related to this expansion. Monitoring land use and land cover from remote sensing data and geoprocessing tools can contribute to understand the deforestation dynamics in this region. Thus, the goal of this study was to analyze the space-temporal dynamics of land use and land cover for the Rio Corrente basin, located in the territory of MATOPIBA, specifically to the south of Piauí. In this study, we used images from Landsat-5 Thematic Mapper (TM) e Landsat-8 Operational Land Imager (OLI) satellites for the years 1986, 1996, 2006, and 2016 and we performed a supervised classification for these years using the Maximum Likelihood Algorithm (Maxver), in QGIS 2.14.3. The classification had the accuracy assessment using the Kappa Index. Between 1986 and 2016, the Mata Ciliar/Cerradão class was reduced 39.54 km² (9.1%). The Cerrado Denso/Cerrado Ralo class reduced 129.71 km², corresponding...
The intensive use of agrochemicals has been associated with global human health problems and environmental contamination. Brazil is the world’s largest agrochemical consumer, and this position highlights the growth of agribusiness in the MATOPIBA region (Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia states). The use of agrochemicals is recurrent in local agricultural practices. However, there is little information on the environmental impacts and risks of contamination regarding river basins in this region. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the risk of contamination by agrochemicals in the basin area of the Açailândia River in Maranhão. From the multicriteria evaluation, environmental information plans were used to determine the trend of water behavior, infiltration, and runoff, along with agrochemical transportation. The joint evaluation of this information was used to generate the final map of the areas of contamination risk posed by agrochemicals in the region. The hydrographic basin presented high anthropization, with an increase of approximately 27% in land use and occupation by crops in the period from 1984 to 2018. The area of 1087.62 km², corresponding to 35.9% of the basin area, presented a high and extremely high risk of contamination.
MULTIVARIATE STATISTICS APPLIED TO WATER QUALITY IN DIFFERENT HYDROGRAPHIC MICROBASE ENVIRONMENTS ABSTRACT: Studies on the water quality behavior are important, so the objective of this work was to group the studied waters regarding the similarity and to select the physical-chemical characteristics to explain the variability of water quality in four micro-basins. Four micro-basins with different soil uses were selected: pasture, forest regeneration, forest and coffee; under different environments: lentic and lotic environments, springs and groundwater. The collections occurred between February 2014 and December 2014, being analyzed: total coliforms and thermotolerant; dissolved oxygen (OD); total nitrogen (Nt); PO43-; turbidity; temperature; pH; Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD); electrical conductivity (EC); total solids (TS); dissolved solids (SD); suspended solids (SS); and the metals calcium, magnesium and iron. Multivariate statistical analysis techniques were used, through cluster analysis (AA) and principal component analysis (PCA). In AA, four distinct groups were formed in the rainy season and three in the dry season. The difference between the environments was the main factor of influence in the segregation of the groups. From the PCA, 4 main components were selected, which explained 73.09% of the total data variance. The selected variables were CE, turbidity, magnesium, iron, SD, Nt, BOD, pH and thermotolerant coliforms. Keywords: water resources; cluster analysis; principal components; river basin management.
