This paper describes the marketing ways and the margins of trade of five species of ornamental fish species, which are caught on the Xingu River, State of Pará, Brazil. Data collection was carried out intentionally and sequentially of 51 actors of the supply chain, including fishermen, wholesalers and national and international retailers. The results indicate that ornamental fish can undergo up to six marketing agents before arriving to the finish consumer. The sunshine pleco (Scobinancistrus aureatus) is the species of the greatest value in the market, being sold to the final consumer at the price of up to R$ 543.00, an increase of 1,361% in the North American market and 1,527% in the European market. The marketing margins are high: 92.68% in the European market and 89.24% in the North American market. Looking at the distributions of benefits, it is concluded that the international market appropriates the greater part of the value generated by the activity.Key words: fishery economy; trade; aquarium fish; Amazonia.
This study evaluates the production behavior and prices in the beef cattle industry in the Brazilian Amazon. We used time series data obtained from various sources and employed multiple regression and polynomial regression analysis. For the price analysis, we used the classical time series model and separated the seasonal and cyclic indices based on the 12-month centered moving average. The analyses covered the period from 1990 to 2015, when the regional cattle population grew at a rate of 5% per year, compared to the national growth rate of 1.7%. The price analysis reveals the existence of cycles in regional cattle ranching, defined mainly by an inverse correlation between the price of fattened cattle and the slaughter of matrices. As for the variables determining the growth of the cattle population, we find that rural credit policy assumes an important role in enabling the supply of resources for financing livestock projects that are more popular than investments in agriculture. The creation and structuring of state agricultural defense agencies in the late 1990s represents an important measure in the institutional sphere, as the implementation of animal health policies and programs has generated a favorable environment for the expansion of investments in meat production and processing, in addition to opening up opportunities for trade in the domestic and international markets.
The Acai, a fruit of the Acai tree (Euterpe oleracea Mart.), is one of the main foods consumed by the riverside communities in the Brazilian Amazon. In addition, it has become the main source of income of these small producers as its consumption has widely expanded since the 1990s due to the recognition of its properties as an energetic and functional food. In order to analyze the production system and the socioeconomic changes that occurred in rural communities whose economical support is from the management of the Acai tree, a case study was carried out in two communities on the island of Mamangal, in the municipality of Igarapé-Miri, in the state of Pará, Brazilian Amazon. Fifty-two semistructured questionnaires were applied to the Acai farming families in these communities located in the municipality in the largest Brazilian producer of this fruit. The main transformations observed in the assessed communities, especially since the last decade, were influenced by the access to electric energy and the expansion of income from the Acai that made possible the expansion of the acquisition of durable consumer goods that even contributed to diversifying the diet of those farmers. Some of the difficulties faced by Acai production are the lack of technical assistance and rural extension services as well in addition to the strong dependence of the communities on the income generated by the Acai.
Abstract:The present work aimed to analyze the socioeconomic dynamics and the organization in agroextractivist family units of the remaining community of quilombo Rio Gurupá, Municipality of Cachoeira do Arari, Marajó, state of Pará. It is a study carried out through quantitative research, Qualitative, with methodological tools being in-depth interviews and questionnaires with open and closed questions, applied to 39 community members, representing 26% of the community's residents. The results indicate that 79% of producers have low level of education (incomplete elementary education and illiteracy). The houses are mostly wood and there is a great lack of basic sanitation and access to treated water. From the reconfiguration of productive, cultural and environmental activities, alternatives are created for the development of family units. However, açaí's extractivism is still the main market activity developed by the community, while the others are aimed at self-consumption, during the off-season of the main product, or even to complement the family income. The reconstruction and valorization of the natural resources and cultural identity of the community in question are closely related to the recognition and incentive of the extractive activity, not only as a subsistence activity, but as an alternative that seeks to attribute economic value to the standing forest.
The objective of this study was to analyze the structure and conjuncture of the buffalo breeding tendency in the state of Pará, in order to generate relevant information for decision-making of farmers involved in the activity, as well as to guide public policies to stimulate the development sector of Pará’s economy in Brazilian Amazon. The study was conducted using secondary data, collected from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA), Ministry of Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC), Getulio Vargas Foundation (FGV), Central Bank of Brazil (BACEN) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on the herd, production, price and financing granted to buffalo breeding. The Brazilian buffalo herd is concentrated in the northern region of the country, with 66.15% of the total herd, particularly in the state of Pará, which participates with 37.90% of the Brazilian herd, constituting the largest producing state in Brazil. In this state, the activity is concentrated in the Marajó meso-regions and in the Lower Amazon. In addition, it was found that the volume of rural credit granted to buffalo herd projects, fluctuated from 1995 to 2015, concentrating in the period from 2004 to 2007, stimulated by the expansion of cattle raising at pasture due to Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), a disease triggered in Europe over that period.
