Na contemporaneidade, transformações nas configurações sociais do poder vêm modificando os padrões das relações intergeracionais, colocando educadores escolares diante de impasses advindos de um fenômeno anunciado como crise da autoridade docente. O presente artigo propõe apresentar uma experiência de pesquisa que buscou compreender os significados atribuídos à autoridade docente por alunos adolescentes matriculados em duas escolas públicas de São João del-Rei, Minas Gerais. Referenciada nas contribuições das perspectivas do interacionismo simbólico e da etnometodologia, a coleta de dados realizou-se por três diferentes procedimentos de investigação: observação de sala de aula, oficinas de dinâmica de grupo e entrevistas semiestruturadas. Concluímos que a ordem da hierarquização na sala de aula não mais emana somente da tradição, da submissão à autoridade aceita a priori como absoluta, mas também do consentimento e do reconhecimento das relações que foram estabelecidas entre professores e alunos.
