RESUMENLas estrategias comerciales de los libreros y editores españoles para desembarcar en los mercados americanos son analizadas en un contexto signado por las tendencias americanistas en el plano político y las iniciativas regeneracionistas en el económico durante el periodo que va del Centenario de las Independencias hasta la Guerra Civil española. Se abordan algunas de las políticas empresariales editoriales implementadas en Cataluña, el liderazgo ejercido por esta región como epicentro del proyecto hispano, y finalmente las condiciones que permitieron la creación de la editorial Sudamericana en Buenos Aires ante la inminencia del triunfo franquista. Los ejes de estudio son las estrategias editoriales y comerciales; el peso de las asociaciones y corporaciones patronales del libro; y los vínculos tejidos con el sector intelectual argentino en las primeras décadas del siglo XX a través de delegaciones consulares, instituciones culturales y cámaras españolas de comercio.
Este trabajo indaga el proceso de constitución del género novelístico en la Argentina entre 1880 y 1890 y sus múltiples conexiones con los cambios económicos, sociales y culturales que se profundizan a partir de la consolidación definitiva del Estado nacional con la presidencia de Julio A. Roca. La emergencia de la novela tiene lugar principalmente en ese verdadero campo de disputas en torno de la formación de la opinión pública en que consiste la prensa porteña, en la cual el género se emplea para percibir y explorar los procesos de cambio social, así como también con el objeto de construir un espacio para la experiencia humana desde el cual juzgar la sociedad que da forma a esa experiencia y al mismo tiempo la transforma. Por este motivo, resulta productivo adjudicar las razones de la importancia inédita que cobra la novela en las dos últimas décadas del siglo XIX a algunas de las grandes transformaciones culturales que sacuden la sociedad argentina, entre las que se destacan la modernización de la prensa, el crecimiento de los centros urbanos, en particular la ciudad de Buenos Aires y la expansión del público lector.
De acuerdo con los datos manejados por el editor catalán Pablo Riera y Sans, miembro de la junta directiva del Institut Català de les Arts del Llibre, a fines del siglo XIX España participaba con un escasísimo 3% en el mercado del libro en Hispanoamérica, muy por debajo de las ediciones americanas, francesas, inglesas y alemanas, que dominaban los mercados de la región (Riera i Sans, 1901: 4) 2 Algunos editores que producían libros en castellano para exportar
El artículo reconstruye las políticas editoriales de Ángel Rama como director literario de la Biblioteca Ayacucho, haciendo hincapié en la formación de redes intelectuales en América Latina y en la consolidación de un canon latinoamericano no solo a partir de la selección de los títulos reeditados en la colección, sino también de sus paratextos, en particular los prólogos de cada volumen. Las reediciones de la Biblioteca Ayacucho buscan abarcar un conjunto de saberes para ofrecer a los lectores un conocimiento enciclopédico del espacio latinoamericano.
