ince bleaching has become a popular procedure, the effect of peroxides on dental hard tissues is of great interest in research. Purpose: The aim of this in vitro study was to perform a qualitative analysis of the human enamel after the application of in-office bleaching agents, using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Materials and Methods: Twenty intact human third molars extracted for orthodontic reasons were randomly divided into four groups (n=5) treated as follows: G1-storage in artificial saliva (control group); G2-four 30-minute applications of 35% carbamide peroxide (total exposure: 2h); G3-four 2-hour exposures to 35% carbamide peroxide (total exposure: 8h); G4-two applications of 35% hydrogen peroxide, which was light-activated with halogen lamp at 700mW/cm 2 during 7min and remained in contact with enamel for 20min (total exposure: 40min). All bleaching treatments adopted in this study followed the application protocols advised by manufacturers. Evaluation of groups submitted to 35% carbamide peroxide was carried out after two time intervals (30 minutes and 2 hours per session), following the extreme situations recommended by the manufacturer. Specimens were prepared for SEM analysis performing gold sputter coating under vacuum and were examined using 15kV at 500x and 2000x magnification. Results: Morphological alterations on the enamel surface were similarly detected after bleaching with either 35% carbamide peroxide or 35% hydrogen peroxide. Surface porosities were characteristic of an erosive process that took place on human enamel. Depression areas, including the formation of craters, and exposure of enamel rods could also be detected. Conclusion: Bleaching effects on enamel morphology were randomly distributed throughout enamel surface and various degrees of enamel damage could be noticed. Clinical significance: In-office bleaching materials may adversely affect enamel morphology and therefore should be used with caution. Uniterms: Hydrogen peroxide; Carbamide peroxide; Tooth bleaching.esde o aumento da popularidade de tratamentos clareadores, o interesse em se pesquisar os efeitos dos peróxidos nos tecidos dentais duros é crescente. he main goal of this study was to histologically evaluate the healing of surgically created defects on the tibiae of adult male rats after implantation of two types of bioactive glass. Sixteen adult Wistar rats (body weight of 300g) were divided into two groups: PerioGlas (PG) (n=8) and BioGran (BG) (n=8). Unicortical bone defects with 3-mm diameter were performed in both tibiae of the animals and filled with two types of glass particles. The rats were then sacrificed at 7, 14, 30 and 60 days, and the tissues were prepared for histological processing, sectioning, and staining with hematoxylin and eosin, as well as Mallory trichrome, and analyzed under light microscope. Within 7-14 days, both groups presented connective tissue septa with new bone formation, more intense in the PG group. In the subsequent periods (30 and 60 days), both groups presented more mature bone tissue around the glass particles. Bone trabeculae formed in all experimental periods were juxtaposed to the glass particles. It can be concluded that both materials promoted comparable bone formation over the entire extension of the defect, independently of the size of the granules, thus confirming their biological osteoconductive property.
Regeneration of periodontal and alveolar ridge defects utilizing membranes is a well-established procedure in reconstructive surgery. Biomaterial characteristics and membrane design employed in guided tissue regeneration (GTR) techniques play an important role in good results. The purpose of this histologic experimental study in rats was to compare the use of two physical barriers in the osteopromotion by using GTR principles in bone defects created in tibias. Fifteen animals divided into 3 groups were used: group I (non-porous polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) barrier), group II (coral hydroxyapatite (HA) blocks), and group III (defects that received no physical barrier). Histological examination showed varied amounts of newly formed bone beneath both types of barriers. The non-porous PTFE barrier showed better results than the HA group. The results of this study suggest that bone regeneration can be successfully enhanced by a submerged membrane technique.
BIOLOGICAL COMPATIBILITY OF SOME TYPES OF ENDODONTIC CALCIUM HYDROXIDE AND GLASS IONOMER CEMENTS BIOCOMPATIBILIDADE DE ALGUNS TIPOS DE CIMENTO ENDODÔNTICO À BASE DE HIDRÓXIDO DE CÁLCIO E CIMENTOS DE IONÔMERO DE VIDROhe purpose of this work was to evaluate the biological compatibility of the Sealapex, Apexit, Sealer 26 and Ketac Endo endodontic cements. Polyethylene tubes containing these cements were implanted in the subcutaneous tissue of 40 (forty) rats. The animals were sacrificed after 14 and 90 days. A descriptive analysis of the reactions found in the connective tissue by contact with the cements was performed. The magnitude of inflammatory infiltrate, the presence and predominance of cell types and their distribution as to the filling material and reparative phenomena, such as fibroblastic and angioblastic proliferation and formation of fibrous capsules, were subjectively measured. After 90 days, all cements presented statistically significant reduction of the inflammatory reaction, presence of a fibrous tissue capsule in contact with the opening of the tubes containing the filling materials, and reduction of fibroblastic proliferation. Angioblastic proliferation decreased only for the Sealer 26 and Ketac Endo groups. All cements tested were either partially or totally phagocyted, and the mildest inflammatory response was found for the Sealer 26 group at both evaluation periods.
ABsTRACTThe high dental implant success rate is directly linked to the presence of adequate bone volume, which enables and maintains the osseointegration of dental implants. This study aimed to report a clinical case of a female with agenesis of the right maxillary lateral incisor (12), due to cleft lip and palate. Because the bone and mucosal defects of the area, the treatment planning comprised guided bone regeneration with the association of autogenous bone, platelet rich plasm (PRP), and expanded polytetrafluoroethylene membrane (e-PTFE,Gore-Tex), performed in 2005. After nine months, a new evaluation was carried out and revealed that the area was still not suitable for implant placement. Thus, an allogenous bone graft was planned. Elapsed another nine months, the implant was placed. After six months, the implant was reopened and a metal-ceramic crown was installed. The 5-year following-up appointment showed the presence of fistula with purulent secretion at the buccal cortical plate. We attempted to control the fistula with antibiotics and follow-up clinically and radiographically. The examinations suggested a communication with the right nasal cavity, which decreased until nowadays. The osseointegrated dental implant was in function, without symptomatology. The autogenous bone graft is still more effective than allogenous bone graft. Further studies are necessary to achieve better evaluations.
