Introduction:The Health-Related Quality of Life (HRQoL), a subjective and multidimensional variable, has intrigued researchers in the contemporary world, as it is a determinant in the health promotion of any population. Thus, this study aimed to verify the perception of quality of life among university students in the state of Amazonas, Brazil. Methodology: This is a descriptive crosssectional study with a quantitative approach, involving 600 students (272 men and 328 women), aged between 18 and 37 years (25.54 ± 5.36). The instrument used to assess HRQoL was the SF-36, an instrument that assesses physical and mental concepts encompassed in eight distinct domains. Data were analysed using simple descriptive statistics, with determination of means, medians and standard deviations, with a significance level of 5% (p≤0.05). Results: The evaluated domains that were satisfactory were functional capacity (84.0), pain (41.0), vitality (56.8) and mental health (65.4). The domains limitation in physical aspects (72.2), general health status (48.1) and limitation in emotional aspects (62.2) presented unsatisfactory values. When comparing genders, no significant differences were found. Conclusion: The HRQoL level of the sample was classified as satisfactory, but with domains such as limitation due to physical aspects, mental health, vitality and emotional aspects not very satisfactory, especially because they are university students with low average age, which reinforces the need of researching the factors that have negatively influenced the general quality of life of this population, which requires more attention from researchers and public managers in the area of preventive health.
People with Down Syndrome (DS) present metabolic differences when compared to the general population, which ends up at a higher prevalence of overweight and lower rates of aerobic fitness. The aim of this study was analysing the association of aerobic fitness and body composition in individuals with DS. Thirty individuals with DS from the city of Londrina / Brazil with a mean age of 18.00±3.66 years were evaluated. The variables body mass index, body fat, and aerobic fitness (VO²peak) were investigated. Men were taller than women, presented a higher percentage of lean body mass and higher VO²peak, while women showed higher means for android, gynoid and total fat. Aerobic fitness was positively associated with bone mineral density and inversely associated with nutritional status, lean body mass and body fat.
