Abstract Physical properties of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens Mazel ex H. de Lehaie) at different ages and culm positions. The searching for renewable material with low environment impact put bamboo forward as a material that promotes the sustainable development due to its fast growing and that is not necessary to replant after harvesting. The aim of this study was to evaluate the following physical properties at different culm positions (base, middle and top) and ages (1, 3 and 5 years old) of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescen Mazel ex H. de Lehaie): moisture content, basic density and shrinkage. The results showed that there was no significant interaction between the factors “age” and “position” for moisture content and basic density according to ANOVA in factorial arrange (95% of probability). Moisture content decreased with the increase of age and from base to top, while basic density increased with age and from base to top. Significant interaction between the factors “age” and “position” was only observed for shrinkage test according to ANOVA in factorial arrange. The portion less stable was the top of bamboo with five years old, which presented the highest radial, tangential and volumetric shrinkages. The basal portion of three years old was the most stable in volumetric and tangential shrinkage. The portions of base and top of one year old were the most stable in radial shrinkage. Keywords: Phyllostachys pubescens; moso bamboo; physical properties.
Bamboo is a natural resource with a wide range of applications, especially moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens Mazel ex H. de Lehaie), which is one of the most used species in the world. The main objective of this work was to determine the axial tensile strength, hardness and wear resistance of moso bamboo culms planted in Paraná, Brazil. Axial tensile strength was tested by the modification of a standard designed for wood; hardness was measured by the Brinell Test method and wear resistance was assessed by the taber abraser method. Analysis of variance with a factorial arrangement was applied to verify the effect of the treatments, resulting from the combination of three ages (one, three and five years old) and three culm positions (base, middle and top), and to check a possible interaction between these factors. No significant interaction was verified between age and position for axial tensile strength and hardness, and these properties increased as the age increased and culm position rose. Moso bamboo has potential for the flooring industry because of its low mass loss in the test of wear resistance and the satisfactory hardness when compared to other bamboo species and to traditional Brazilian timber species. Keywords: Mechanical properties; age; culm position. Palavras-chave: Propriedades mecânicas; idade; posição no colmo.
Palavras-chave: Propriedades mecânicas; idade; posição no colmo. Abstract Compressive strength and flexure of Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens). The aim of this study was to determine the mechanical properties of bending and compression parallel to grain of Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) and analyze the effect of stem position and age on these properties. It was also studied the correlation between the bulk density and mechanical properties. The tests used specimens produced in glued laminated material, adapted according to ASTM D143 solid wood-96 norm, following proportions maintained by Ahmad (2000). The results revealed increasing trend of resistance in bending with age and stem position in absolute terms. In relation to compression tests parallel to grain, the compression strength (fc) and the MOE had the same tendency to increase resistance with age and with the position. The tests revealed that there was no statistically significant interaction between age and culm position. The apparent density of bamboo revealed a positive and linear correlation in bending test at MOR and MOE, as well as at parallel compression test to the fibers for the compression force (fc) and the MOE. Low correlation coefficients had been obtained between the focused apparent density and mechanical properties.
Greenhouses used for agricultural production are structures to partially control soil and climate conditions such as temperature, air humidity, radiation, wind, and atmospheric composition. Thus, according to Cermeño (1990) protected cultivation has quantitative and qualitative advantages compared to field cultivation since productivity in the first system can be 2 to 3 times higher. Bamboo is considered a sustainable material because it is renewable, absorbs carbon dioxide, uses solar energy, and is easily incorporated into nature at your life cycle end. The aim of this paper was to analyze the technical feasibility of bamboo in the construction of a greenhouse for protected cultivation. For this, the aerodynamic and structural behavior was analyzed in order to obtain the safety margins for this construction. With the safety margins it was determined that bamboo is a plausible material for the construction of these structures.
