En este trabajo se explora el potencial del diseño como herramienta para apoyar el desarrollo de comunidades vulnerables, a través del uso de materiales alternativos para el mejoramiento del hábitat popular. El proceso implica un reconocimiento de los recursos tradicionales y los saberes específicos de las comunidades en distintos contextos urbanos y rurales, y el diálogo interdisciplinar entre el diseño industrial y otras disciplinas. Se realiza un recorrido por un conjunto de trabajos académicos que han revisitado técnicas tradicionales como el bahareque, explorado nuevas opciones para métodos de construcción con tierra cruda, o para un material emergente como la guadua. Los resultados obtenidos son una demostración de las posibilidades que ofrece un diseño enfocado a resolver problemas o carencias sociales a través de la participación y el diálogo con la población implicada.
