Seit Windaus und Hess, Eosenheim und Webster über die epochemachende Entdeckung berichtet haben, daß Ergosterin durch Bestrahlung mit ultraviolettem Licht in ein antirachitisch hochwirksames Produkt übergeht, steht die Frage offen, ob das wirksame Prinzip des bestrahlten Ergosterins mit dem seit langem als antirachitisch wirksam bekannten Inhaltsstoff von Fischleberölen identisch ist. Zahlreiche Forscher, in der Hauptsache solche mit biologischer Arbeitsrichtung, haben sich mit diesem Problem beschäftigt. Das Interesse an dieser Frage hat sich noch verstärkt, nachdem es in neuerer Zeit gelungen ist, den antirachitischen Wirkstoff des bestrahlten Ergosterins in reiner, kristallisierter Form darzustellen. Da die antirachitische Wirksamkeit des bestrahlten Ergosterins diejenige der vitaminreichsten Fischleberöle um ein Vielfaches übertrifft, und die Anreicherung des wirksamen Prinzips aus der letztgenannten Quelle noch nicht in wünschenswerter Weise gelungen ist, war ein direkter Vergleich chemischer und physikalischer Eigenschaften beider Faktoren nicht durchführbar bzw. entbehrten alle dahin führenden Versuche 1 ) jeder Grundlage. Unsere Kenntnis von den physikalischen und chemischen Eigenschaften des antirachitisch wirksamen Prinzips der Fischleberöle ist noch sehr gering. Nur wenige Eigenschaften allgemeiner Natur, die als gesichert angesehen werden können, sind bekannt geworden.
