While the dehydrogenation of ß-carotene, CioHse, with N-bromosuccinimide in CCL, solution yielded hydrocarbons, C4oH"-C«Hm, the use of commercial, i.e., ethanol-containing, chloroform as a solvent resulted, after dehydrbbrofnination, in the isolation mainly of three ketones, viz. 4-keto-3',4'-dehydro-/3-carotene and lesser amounts of 4-keto-/S-carotene and 4,4'diketo-/9-carotene. The structural clarification of these ketones is represented in Charts 1-3, and is based on the interrelationship with further carotene derivatives such as 4-keto-4'-hydroxy-/3-carotene, 4,4'-dihydroxy-and 4,4'-dimethoxy-/3carotenes, 4-hydroxy-3',4'-dehydro-/3-carotene, some alkoxy compounds, etc. A discussion of spectroscopic effects is given and some assays of vitamin A potencies are mentioned.
