Durch die Arbeit H a n s F i s C h e r s und seiner Schule wurde die Struktur der Pyrrolfarbstoffe weitgehend aufgeklärt. Danach lassen sich die menschlichen Gallenfarbstoffe vom Porphyrin IX, das an seiner U-Methingruppe aufgespalten ist, ableiten und führen deshalb die Bezeichnung IXa. Ihr Haupt-Vertreter ist das Bilirubin, durch dessen Reduktion es gelang, über Mesobilirubin Urobilinogen zu erhaIten. Urobilinogen aus biologischem Material wurde erstmalig von H. F i s C h e r und M e i e r -B e t z aus dem Harn Leberkranker gewonnen. Durch Dehydrierung der mittleren Methylengruppe zur Methingruppe entsteht daraus Urobilin. Ein weiterer Gallenfarbstoff, der von W a t s o n aus Fäzes isoliert wurde, ist das Sterkobilin. Es besitzt wie das Urobilin eine farblose Vorstufe, das Sterkobilinogen, das jedoch nicht kristallisiert gewonnen werden konnte. Sterkobilin ist um 4 Wasserstoffatome reicher als Urobilin, es ist optisch aktiv und ließ sich aus Bilirubin durch einfache Reduktion noch nicht herstellen. Wie B a u m g ä r t e l zeigte, entsteht es dagegen sehr leicht, wenn man Bilirubin in Gegenwart von Cystin mit Bact. coli und Bac. verrucosus bebrütet. Es handelt sich dabei um einen spezifischen fermentativen Vorgang, der durch Bakterienfermente hervorgerufen wird. In neuerer Zeit hat W. C. M e y e r Bilifubinbouillon mit Stuhlpartikelchen versetzt und bei 37 Grad gehalten. Er erhielt Sterkobilin und einen dritten Farbkörper, der Aldehyd-und Schlesinger-Reaktion gibt. Es ist ihm dabei gelungen, Mesobilirubin als Zwischenstufe nachzuweisen. Urobilinogen konnte er in keinem Fall finden. Berücksichtigt man die Untersuchungsergebnisse an acholischen Fäzes, in denen B a u m g ä r t e l immer Urobilin und kein Sterkobilinalso auch keine Umwandlung von Urobilin in Sterkobilinfeststellte, und die B a u m g ä r -. t e l schen Reduktionsversuche mit Gewebebreien am Bilirubin, so scheinen physiologisch zwei verschiedene Reduktionsmöglichkeiten für das Bilirubin zu bestehen: die eine, die über Mesobilirubin zum Urobilinogen, und dfe andere, die über Mesobilirubin zum Sterkobilin führt.
