-Light soils occupy 8% of the Brazilian territory and are especially expressive in the new and last agricultural frontier in Brazil: the Matopiba region -in the states of Maranhão, Tocantins, Piauí, and Bahia -, where they represent 20% of the area. These soils fit into the textural classes of sand and loamy sand or sandy loam, down to 0.75-m soil depth or deeper, and they are mainly represented by Neossolos Quartzarênicos (Quartzipsamments) and, partly, by Latossolos (Oxisols) and Argissolos (Ultisols). The understanding of soil functioning depends on the establishment of distinguishing criteria for: organic matter dynamics; content and mineralogy of the clay fraction; coarse sand and total sand contents, in relation to those of fine sand; mean diameter of the sand fraction; and water retention capacity. These criteria can contribute for the zoning and for the conservation and fertility management of light soils, as well as for the estimation of their agricultural potential. Integrated production systems, such as crop-livestock and crop-livestock-forestry integration, besides no-tillage with crop rotation, mixed forestry planting with legumes, and the use of green manure and cover crops are relevant for the proper management of these soils. The objective of this review was to characterize light soils and to highlight the main challenges regarding their agricultural potential and their conservation and fertility managements, in face of the expansion and consolidation of the new Brazilian agricultural frontier.
Sorghum has a great potential for bioenergy production, because it presents a high biomass production, and nutritional aspects are important components to be considered in the cultivation with this purpose. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of nitrogen and potassium fertilization on nutrition and macronutrient uptake by sorghum biomass. Experiments were conducted with cultivars CMSXS 7020 and CMSXS 652 in the experimental area of Embrapa Maize and Sorghum in a randomized blocks experimental design with three replications. Treatments of each experiment consisted of a 4x4 factorial comprising four N doses (0, 80, 160 and 240 kg ha -1 ) and four doses of K 2 O (0, 60, 120 and 180 kg ha -1 ) topdressed. In general, fertilization with N and K increased foliar rates of N, P, K and S and decreased Ca and Mg. Regarding nutrient uptake, an increased extraction of N, K and S and reduced extraction of P, Ca and Mg were observed in biomass sorghum with the application of N and K.
In recent years the worldwide demand for alternative fuel sources has been increasing, and sorghum emerges as a promising plant for the production of ethanol. Therefore, for a competitive exploration, biomass productivity, as well as its fiber quality, some aspects need to be considered. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effects of nitrogen and potassium fertilization on yield and fiber quality of sorghum biomass for lignocellulosic ethanol. Experiments were conducted with cultivars CMSXS 7020 and CMSXS 652 in the experimental area of Embrapa Maize and Sorghum in experimental design of randomized blocks with three replications. Treatments of each experiment consisted of a 4x4 factorial, involving four N doses (0, 80, 160 and 240 kg ha-1) and four of K 2 O (0, 60, 120 and 180 kg ha-1) topdressed. In general, only the total dry matter of the CMSXS 652 cultivar was affected by N rates, and maximum yield was obtained with the dose of 130 kg ha-1 , with no effect of doses of K. Fertilization with N and K increased the amounts of cellulose and hemicellulose and reduced lignin and ashes.
CROPPING SYSTEMS ON THE PERFORMANCE OF CORN PLANTS IN THE SOUTHWESTERN AMAZONABSTRACT-A sustainable strategy for agricultural systems is the use of cover crops in no-tillage systems, as a conservationist soil practice. This paper aimed to evaluate the short-term effects of different cover crops on some physiological and agronomic attributes of corn crop in the Southwestern Amazon region. The effects of 15 cover plants on the biomass and grains yield, plant height, ear insertion height, ear index, mass of 100 grains, leaf nitrogen content and a, b and total chlorophyll levels of corn plants were evaluated. A randomized complete block design was used with four replications. Grain yield, fresh and dry biomass yield, mass of 100 grains and chlorophyll content were affected by some cover crops. Jack bean promoted the highest grain yield (7,539.3 kg ha -1 ) and biomass yield (16.2 Mg ha -1 dry matter) among the options assessed. Cover crops provided different levels of total, a and b chlorophyll levels, on the corn plants. Some cover crops presented the potential to improve the agronomic performance of the succeeding corn crop in the Southwestern Amazon region. The proper agronomic performance of corn in a no-till system depends on the adequate choice of cover plants to compose the system. The Plant root system is an important organ which supplies water and nutrients to plants. Information is limited on influence of nitrogen fertilization on upland rice root growth. A greenhouse experiment was conducted to evaluate the influence of nitrogen fertilization on root growth of 20 upland rice genotypes. The N rates used were 0 mg/kg (low) and 300 mg/kg (high) of soil. Nitrogen X genotype interactions for root length and root dry weight were highly significant (P < 0.01), indicating that differences among genotypes were not consistent at two N rates. Overall, greater root length and root dry weight were obtained at an N fertilization rate of 300 mg/kg compared with the 0 mg N/kg soil. However, genotypes differ significantly in producing root length and root dry weight. Nitrogen fertilization produced fine roots and more root hairs compared with control treatment. Based on root dry weight efficiency index (RDWEI) for N use efficiency, 70% genotypes were classified as efficient, 15% were classified as moderately efficient and 15% were classified as inefficient. Root dry weight efficiency index trait can be incorporated in upland rice for improving water and nutrient efficiency in favor of higher yields.
