RESUMO -O experimento foi conduzido na Fazenda Experimental Nova Baden, da Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária de Minas Gerais (EPAMIG), em Lambari, MG, objetivando avaliar o desempenho dos adubos verdes guandu (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) e crotalária-júncea (Crotalaria juncea L.), com e sem incorporação da biomassa, na recuperação da fertilidade de um solo (Latossolo Vermelho-Escuro distrófico) degradado, cultivado com braquiária (Brachiaria decumbens Stapf.). Empregou-se o delineamento experimental de blocos casualizados em esquema fatorial de parcelas subdivididas, com três repetições, colocando-se nas parcelas o manejo da biomassa, e nas subparcelas, as leguminosas e a braquiária. As três culturas foram manejadas na fase final de florescimento das leguminosas, quando se fizeram amostragens de biomassa para determinação de produção de matéria seca, concentração e conteúdo de nutrientes. Realizaram-se avaliações de amostras de solo em três épocas (90, 120 e 150 dias após o manejo) e seis profundidades (0-5, 5-10, 10-20, 20-40, 40-60 e 60-80 cm). O guandu se destacou na primeira avaliação quanto às melhorias na fertilidade do solo, e a crotalária-júncea, de mineralização mais lenta, na segunda. GREEN MANURING IN THE RECOVERY OF DEGRADED OXISOIL FERTILITYABSTRACT -The experiment was conducted at the Empresa de Pesquisa Agropecuária de Minas Gerais, Nova Baden Experimental Station, in Lambari, MG, Brazil, aiming at evaluating the performance of the green manures pigeonpea (Cajanus cajan (L.) Millsp.) and sunnhep (Crotalaria juncea L.) with and without incorporation of the biomass, on the recovery of fertility of degraded soil cultivated with brachiaria (Brachiaria decumbens Stapf.). Experimental design used was of randomized block in factorial scheme of split plots with three replications, putting the biomass handling in the plots and both the legumes and brachiaria in the subplots. The three crops were cut and handled at the late flowering stage of the legumes, when samplings of the plant material were done for assessing dry matter yield, concentration and amount of nutrient. Evaluations of soil samplings at six depths (0-5, 5-10, 10-20, 20-40, 40-60 e 60-80 cm) and three periods (90, 120 and 150 days after handling) were performed. Pigeonpea stood out in the first evaluation concerning the improvements in soil fertility and sunnhep and slower mineralization, in the second. In the third evaluation, no benefits from the green manure on the chemical properties of the soil were found.

SUMMARYVegetable production in conservation tillage has increased in Brazil, with positive effects on the soil quality. Since management systems alter the quantity and quality of organic matter, this study evaluated the influence of different management systems and cover crops on the organic matter dynamics of a dystrophic Red Latosol under vegetables. The treatments consisted of the combination of three soil tillage systems: no-tillage (NT), reduced tillage (RT) and conventional tillage (CT) and of two cover crops: maize monoculture and maizemucuna intercrop. Vegetables were grown in the winter and the cover crops in the summer for straw production. The experiment was arranged in a randomized block design with four replications. Soil samples were collected between the crop rows in three layers (0.0-0.05, 0.05-0.10, and 0.10-0.30 m) twice: in October, before planting cover crops for straw, and in July, during vegetable cultivation. The total organic carbon (TOC), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), oxidizable fractions, and the carbon fractions fulvic acid (C FA ), humic acid (C HA ) and humin (C HUM ) were determined. The main changes in these properties occurred in the upper layers (0.0-0.05 and 0.05-0.10 m) where, in general, TOC levels were highest in NT with maize straw. The MBC levels were lowest in CT systems, indicating sensitivity to soil disturbance. Under mucuna, the levels of C HA were lower in RT than NT systems, while the C FA levels were lower in RT than CT. For vegetable production, the C HUM values were lowest in the 0.05-0.10 m layer under CT. With regard to the oxidizable fractions, the tillage systems differed only in the most labile C fractions, with higher levels in NT than CT in the 0.0-0.05 m layer in both summer and winter, with A produção de hortaliças em sistemas conservacionistas tem crescido no Brasil com reflexos positivos na qualidade do solo. Considerando que os sistemas de manejo alteram a quantidade e a qualidade da matéria orgânica, este trabalho teve por objetivo avaliar a influência de diferentes sistemas de manejo e cobertura vegetal na dinâmica da matéria orgânica de um Latosssolo Vermelho distrófico, cultivado com hortaliças. Os tratamentos avaliados consistiram na combinação de três sistemas de manejo de solo: plantio direto (PD); plantio com preparo reduzido (PPR); e preparo convencional (PC), e duas coberturas vegetais: milho e consórcio milho e mucuna. No inverno, foram cultivadas hortaliças; e no verão, cobertura vegetal para palhada. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi de blocos ao acaso com quatro repetições. As amostras de solo foram coletadas na entrelinha de cultivo da hortaliça em três profundidades (0,0-0,05; 0,05-0,10 e 0,10-0,30 m), em duas épocas de amostragem: em outubro, antes do plantio das culturas para formação de palhada; e em julho, durante o cultivo da hortaliça. RESUMOEste trabalho objetivou determinar o impacto de sistemas silviagrícolas na qualidade física de um Latossolo Vermelho ácrico. Em 2012 foram coletadas amostras de solo na camada de 0-0,10 m, nas linhas de árvores e entre essas linhas, em dois sistemas silviagrícolas conduzidos em semeadura direta, sendo um voltado para a segurança alimentar e outro para produção de energia, implantados em 2009, em Santo Antônio de Goiás, GO. Foram determinados a densidade do solo, macroporosidade, porosidade total, índice S, diâmetro dos agregados, capacidade de água disponível e capacidade de aeração, os quais foram comparados com valores considerados, na literatura, como não limitantes à produtividade. Após três anos de implantação dos sistemas silviagrícolas o solo apresentou, nas linhas, melhor qualidade física que entre as linhas de árvores. A densidade do solo, macroporosidade, porosidade total, índice S e capacidade de aeração do solo foram os principais responsáveis por discriminarem os tratamentos. De maneira geral, as combinações de culturas de cobertura e cultura principal que envolveram poáceas resultaram em pior qualidade física do solo.

Urban and periurban gardens: what does the Brazilian literature tell us?Growing vegetables in backyards and in community gardens gained importance as an alternative policy for the reduction of poverty and the increasing of household food intake since the final years of the late century in Brazil. The Brazilian experiences have been reported in different scientific publications but until now, there has not been an attempt to evaluate those results. For that purpose, Brazilian scientific publications were sought in the sites www.google. com.br, www.scielo.com.br, www.periodicos.capes.gov.br and in the Lattes platform from CNPq. The results showed that the majority of publications were available to download free. The number of publications increased between 1996 and 2009 and most of them were published in Congresses and Meetings. Vegetable cultivation contributed to increase of the welfare of population. Nonetheless, several difficulties were reported: chiefly among these, the lack of social organization, lack of access to technical assistance, capital, land and water. Until now, the majority of these projects have been of short duration (less than three years); therefore it is necessary to carry out long term researches in order to evaluate strategies for overcoming these difficulties.
