The presence of heavy metals in food is a threat to human health. Exposure to heavy metals as a result of consumption of contaminated vegetables, as well as their toxicity, is a serious problem. Different branches of industry and the road traffic have a significant impact on environmental pollution with heavy metals. Municipal and industrial sewage also is an important source of those substances. Furthermore, the mineral content of vegetables depends on factors such as the natural content of trace elements in the environment, their levels in mineral fertilizers, and fertilizer doses. In the soil, a natural source of these metals is bedrock. In soils used for agricultural purposes, some quantities of metals are introduced together with fertilizers, both organic and mineral. Additionally, another sources of the metals are plant protection products. Heavy metal dynamics in the soil and their uptake by plants are influenced by soil properties, which play a key role in the bioavailability of these metals. Metal mobility and assimilation are also influenced by the addition of organic and inorganic matter. A significant body of evidence also suggest that the age of the soil plays an important role in modulation of metal bioavailability to plants. Apart from being influenced by the soil-related factors, absorption of metals differs in different types of plants. A significant variation in metal concentrations was also found depending on their location in plant tissues, on plant species, or even on varieties of the same species.

The production of apples in Poland is the largest among the countries of the European Union, and therefore, the consumption of these fruits is high in our country. The aim of this study was to determine the presence of pesticide residues in Polish apples and to assess if these residues pose a risk to the health of the consumer. Furthermore, compliance with legal regulations concerning the use of plant protection products in crop cultivation was ascertained. Pesticide residues were found in 192 samples (61.5% of tested samples). In six samples (1.9%), residues exceeded maximum residue limits. Violations concerned the insecticides: indoxacarb, diazinon and fenitrothion. The highest long-term consumer exposure was found in the case of consumption of apples with diazinon residue for both groups, adults and toddlers [4% acceptable daily intake (ADI), adults; 21% ADI, toddlers]. The highest values of short-term exposure were obtained in the case of consumption of apples with indoxacarb [5% acute reference dose (ARfD), adults; 27% ARfD, toddlers] and fenitrothion (4% ARfD, adults; 23% ARfD, toddlers). Although fungicides are the pesticides found most often in apples, the consumption of apples with insecticide residues constitutes the greatest hazard to human health.

The purpose of the research conducted was to investigate and evaluate the behavior of pyrimethanil, pyraclostrobin, boscalid, cypermethrin and chlorpyrifos, the active ingredients of selected fungicides and insecticides, on ripe fruit and in fully developed leaves of raspberry of the Laszka variety. The field trial was carried out in the period of one month starting from the first fruit picking. The results obtained indicated that residue levels on the day of the first crop picking did not even approximate the corresponding EU-MRLs (http://ec.europa.eu/sanco_pesticides). Individual substances in raspberry fruits and leaves disappeared at a similar rate. As a result of chlorpyrifos application to the soil, its residue in fruits and leaves occurred for the whole period of fruit bearing, though in fruit they dropped successively. To produce raspberries with residues below or equal to 0.01 μg g(-1), the application of pesticides should be stopped at least 2-3 weeks before the first crop picking, and on condition that an appropriate preparation (active in low doses) is applied to the last treatments.

Microalgae are freshwater and marine unicellular photosynthetic organisms that utilize sunlight to produce biomass. Due to fast microalgal growth rate and their unique biochemical profiles and potential applications in food and renewable energy industries, the interest in microalgal research is rapidly increasing. Biochemical and genetic engineering have been considered to improve microalgal biomass production but these manipulations also limited microalgal growth. The aim of the study was the biochemical characterization of recently identified microalgal strain Planktochlorella nurekis with elevated cell size and DNA levels compared to wild type strain that was achieved by a safe non-vector approach, namely co-treatment with colchicine and cytochalasin B (CC). A slight increase in growth rate was observed in twelve clones of CC-treated cells. For biochemical profiling, several parameters were considered, namely the content of proteins, amino acids, lipids, fatty acids, β-glucans, chlorophylls, carotenoids, B vitamins and ash. CC-treated cells were characterized by elevated levels of lipids compared to unmodified cells. Moreover, the ratio of carotenoids to chlorophyll a and total antioxidant capacity were slightly increased in CC-treated cells. We suggest that Planktochlorella nurekis with modified DNA levels and improved lipid content can be considered to be used as a dietary supplement and biofuel feedstock.

The article attempts to assess the usefulness of the Taguchi method to optimise the purification process of synthetic textile wastewater (pH 6.7 - 7.2, Conductivity = 6.71 - 6.84 mS/cm, Salinity = 3581 - 3648 mg NaCl/l, Colour = 560 - 4710 mg Pt/l, COD = 2220 - 2290 mg O2/l, TOC = 394 - 551 mg/l) using K2FeO4. The research was conducted using 3 types of wastewater containing anionic detergent (sodium lauryl sulfate, 100 mg/l) and differing only in the concentration of azo dye Acid Green 16 (AG 16). Technical K2FeO4 was used as an oxidiser, which was subjected to physico-chemical analysis (purity, UV-VIS spectrum, surface characteristics and chemical composition using SEM and EDX methods). For planning and optimising the wastewater treatment process, the Taguchi method was used for four input parameters: pH (2, 7, 12), reaction time (10, 30, 50 min), AG 16 concentrations (20, 120, 220 mg/l) and K2FeO4 concentrations (25, 125, 225 mg/l), for which 9 experiments were performed in accordance with the plan adopted. Test result analysis allowed to indicate the optimal values for individual input parameters (pH 2, time = 50 min, AG 16 = 20 mg/l, K2FeO4 = 125 mg/l). Under these conditions, visual discoloration of wastewater was obtained (AG 16 = 0.4 mg/l, ↓98% ), colour removal (66 mg Pt/l, ↓88%) and DOC (249 mg/l, ↓37%).

Dissipations of three insecticides: chlorantraniliprole, chlorpyrifos-methyl and indoxacarb in apples were studied following their foliar application on apples intended for production of baby food. The apples were sprayed with formulations for control of codling moth (Cydia Pomonella L.) and leafrollers (Tortricidae). Six experiments were conducted; each insecticide was applied individually on dessert apples. A validated gas chromatography-based method with simultaneous electron capture and nitrogen–phosphorus detection (GC-ECD/NPD) was used for the residue analysis. The analytical performance of the method was satisfactory, with expanded uncertainties ≤36% (a coverage factor, k = 2, and a confidence level of 95%). The dissipations of insecticides were studied in pseudo-first-order kinetic models (for which the coefficient of determination, R 2, ranged between 0.9188 and 0.9897). Residues of studied insecticides were below their maximum residue limits of 0.5 mg/kg at an early stage of growth of the fruit. The half-lives of chlorantraniliprole, chlorpyrifos-methyl and indoxacarb were 16–17, 4–6 and 20–24 days, respectively. The initial residue levels declined gradually and reached the level of 0.01 mg/kg in 1 month for chlorpyrifos-methyl, 2 months for chlorantraniliprole and 2.5 months for indoxacarb. To obtain the insecticide residue levels below 0.01 mg/kg, which is the default MRL for food intended for infants and young children, the application of the studied insecticides should be carried out at recommended doses not later then: 1 month before harvest for chlorpyrifos-methyl, 2 months for chlorantraniliprole and 2.5 months for indoxacarb.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (doi:10.1007/s11356-017-8821-z) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.
