Władze w sposób szczególny dbały o stworzenie warunków do nauki dla najmłodszych. Wznoszono więc szkoły powszechne wszystkich typów od jednoklasowych w małych skupiskach ludności po duże szkoły siedmioklasowe w miasteczkach i miastach. Na uwagę zasługują duże szkoły o konstrukcji drewnianej, których wybudowano na omawianym terenie około 100. Większość z nich została wzniesiona w stylu nawiązującym do dworkowego. Istnieje jednak grupa budynków, które swoim stylem nawiązują do modernizmu. Mimo iż w latach 1918 – 1939 zalecano budowanie szkół siedmioklasowych jako murowanych, te placówki zostały zaprojektowane i zrealizowane jako drewniane.
W okresie międzywojennym powstawało wiele założeń szkolnych. Większość z nich charakteryzowała dbałość o zagospodarowanie ich otoczenia. Autorki przedstawiają na kilku przykładach zasady zagospodarowania terenów przy szkołach na przykładzie realizacji na Lubelszczyżnie. Większość z projektowanych otoczeń szkół już nie istnieje, albo jest bardzo zmieniona, co często wpływa negatywnie na rodzimy krajobraz wielu miejsc w Polsce.
