In most periods of European prehistory population was organized into local segments which can be called communities irrespective of what meaning is ascribed to this concept. The reality of prehistoric communities is best born out by the discontinuous distribution of both cemeteries and habitation sites in the country. The fact that the archaeological records seem to suggest spatial continuity in some regions is mostly due to our inability to classify the finds in accordance with a sufficiently fine chronological scheme. In cases where fine chronology can be applied – and Bohemia is one of the possible examples – it becomes clear that the seeming spatial continuity of the record is a consequence of our projecting many discontinuous patterns into one plane – the landsc ipe of today as archaeologists perceive it.
From 11th to 15th August 1969 the X I I t h Nobel Symposium, Jinanced by the Nobel Foundation and organized by the University of Uppsala, was held at Uppsala. There were 40 participants from all over the world: the honorary president was Professm Willard F. Libby. The full proceedings will be published in the Nobel Symposium Series in due course. Here Dr Neustupny of the Archaeological Section of the Czech Academy summarizes the main results of the conference for archaeologists. He says that ;f there is no reference or date mentioned in his text, it means that the facts or thoughts were expressed at the Symposium. Neustupny was one of the archaeologists at the Uppsala conference, and at our request he has compiled this most important summary for archaeologists. He leaves aside points-and they were many-of geophysical interest that arose at Uppsala.
The Laboratory of Applied Nuclear Physics of the Brown Coal Research Institute in Most started the radiocarbon dating of archaeologic samples in 1972. Dates presented in this list were obtained from 1973 to 1974.
