With the intensification of aquaculture technologies, the amount of feed input and waste material is increasing, creating potentially negative impacts on freshwater habitats receiving effluent from such systems. Changes in biodiversity of zooplankton communities is often used to assess the effects of such impacts. Rotifers are suitable for bioindication of water quality due to their fast reaction to environmental changes. We examined seasonal changes in the diversity of rotifer communities along a 3.5 km section of the biggest oxbow lake in the Tisza River basin, Hungary, that received inflow from an intensive tank-based aquaculture farm. We detected a species-rich rotifer community with 26 species. Using the Rényi one-parameter diversity index families, we found that biodiversity increased away from the point of inflow in spring, but after a summer transition period the situation became partially reversed during autumn. At the beginning of the study period, the nutrient-rich effluent strengthened the dominance of common species, which decreased but did not disappear in summer. In autumn, the extra nutrient input delayed the decline of the rotifer community at the point of effluent.
The objective of our study was to survey the accumulated 2-methylisoborneol (MIB) and geosmin (GSM) in fillets of five important farmed fish species in Hungarian aquaculture in relation to MIB and GSM concentrations in water and sediment in the aquatic systems where they were raised: (the planktivorous silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), the herbivorous grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), the bottom-feeding omnivorous common carp (Cyprinus carpio), the omnivorous tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and the carnivorous African catfish (Clarias gariepinus)). Water, sediment and fish samples were collected from different experimental aquatic systems which included a combined aquaculture-algae (CAA) system, effluent-fed fishponds, a pond recycling system and a traditional fishpond. MIB and GSM contents were extracted with distillation-headspace solid-phase-microextraction (SPME) and extracts analysed by GC-MS. Results showed that off-flavour contents in fish fillets were related to the feeding habits of the studied fish species. Higher GSM concentrations were found in the fillet of bottom-feeding common carp than in the silver carp or African catfish in all studied aquatic systems. Usually, low GSM concentrations were detected in the water of fishponds but sometimes the levels of this odour compound in carp fillet were well above the limits of human detection. This suggests that the off-flavour tainting of common carp may originate from the sediment or benthic algallactinomycete sources. Negligible MIB levels were found in all samples in all of the studied aquatic systems.
Összefoglaló: Az ENSZ 2005-ben publikált Millenniumi Ökoszisztéma Felmérése (Millennium Ecosystem Assessment, MEA) szerint, az édesvízhez köthető természetes élőhelyek a legsérülékenyebb ökoszisztémák közé tartoznak, amelyek eltűnése az ember alkotta vizes élőhelyek felértékelődéséhez vezetett. A mesterséges halastavak szerepe kiemelkedő az életminőség, a jóllét és a gazdaság működésének fenntartása szempontjából, ugyanis számos ún. ökoszisztéma-szolgáltatást biztosít a társadalom számára. A Biharugrai-halastavak ökoszisztéma-szolgáltatásainak számbavételére és szociokulturális értékelésére a NAIK-HAKI AquaSpace Horizont 2020 projektjének keretében került sor. Az értékelés során 2016 márciusában kérdőíves felmérést végeztünk a halastavak közelében fekvő öt településen. A tavak élőhely szolgáltatását a válaszadók nemtől, kortól, iskolai végzettségtől és lakhelytől függetlenül maximálisra értékelték, tisztában voltak a halastavak természeti értékével, a térség fejlődésének alapjaként tekintenek rá. A gyermekek természet-szeretetének kialakításához nélkülözhetetlennek tartották a környezeti nevelés szolgáltatást, valamint nagy jelentőségűnek értékelték a hal előállítását is. A halastavakhoz kötődő ökoszisztéma-szolgáltatások helyi jelentőségének jobb megismerése további vizsgálatokat igényel. A combined aquaculture-algae system was developed for the purification and reuse of effluent water from intensive fish production in a combination of a high-rate algal pond and extensive fishpond. The integrated system was operated as a closed system, thus the water demand was reduced through the recirculation of the treated water. The pilotscale experimental system consisted of three different compartments: tanks for intensive fish production, an algal pond where the excess nutrients are removed by algae uptake and a fishpond where the produced algae biomass was consumed by fish. The objective of this study was to describe and evaluate the nutrient transformation efficiency of the combined system through the analysis of the organic carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus budgets.
