A cataract is a condition that causes 17 million people to experience blindness and is the most significant cause of vision loss, around 47.9%. The formation of cataracts is linked to both the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and the reduction of endogenous antioxidants. ROS are highly reactive molecules produced by oxygen. Examples of ROS include peroxides, super-oxides, and hydroxyl radicals. ROS are produced in cellular responses to xenobiotics and bacterial invasion and during mitochondrial oxidative metabolism. Excessive ROS can trigger oxidative stress that initiates the progression of eye lens opacities. ROS and other free radicals are highly reactive molecules because their outer orbitals have one or more unpaired electrons and can be neutralized by electron-donating compounds, such as antioxidants. Examples of natural antioxidant compounds are vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene. Numerous studies have demonstrated that plants contain numerous antioxidant compounds that can be used as cataract preventatives or inhibitors. Natural antioxidant extracts for cataract therapy may be investigated further in light of these findings, which show that consuming a sufficient amount of antioxidant-rich plants is an excellent approach to cataract prevention. Several other natural compounds also prevent cataracts by inhibiting aldose reductase and preventing apoptosis of the eye lens.
Background: Risk perceptions of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) are considered important as they impact community health behaviors. The aim of this study was to determine the perceived risk of infection and death due to COVID-19 and to assess the factors associated with such risk perceptions among community members in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) in Africa, Asia, and South America. Methods: An online cross-sectional study was conducted in 10 LMICs in Africa, Asia, and South America from February to May 2021. A questionnaire was utilized to assess the perceived risk of infection and death from COVID-19 and its plausible determinants. A logistic regression model was used to identify the factors associated with such risk perceptions. Results: A total of 1,646 responses were included in the analysis of the perceived risk of becoming infected and dying from COVID-19. Our data suggested that 36.4% of participants had a high perceived risk of COVID-19 infection, while only 22.4% had a perceived risk of dying from COVID-19. Being a woman, working in healthcare-related sectors, contracting pulmonary disease, knowing people in the immediate social environment who are or have been infected with COVID-19, as well as seeing or reading about individuals infected with COVID-19 on social media or TV were all associated with a higher perceived risk of becoming infected with COVID-19. In addition, being a woman, elderly, having heart disease and pulmonary disease, knowing people in the immediate social environment who are or have been infected with COVID-19, and seeing or reading about individuals infected with COVID-19 on social media or TV had a higher perceived risk of dying from COVID-19. Conclusions: The perceived risk of infection and death due to COVID-19 are relatively low among respondents; this suggests the need to conduct health campaigns to disseminate knowledge and information on the ongoing pandemic.

Pendahuluan : Katarak kongenital merupakan kelainan dimana terjadi kekeruhana pada lensa mata yang terdeteksi sejak lahir. Saat ini katarak kongenital masih menjadi penyebab kebutaan utama pada anak di dunia. Prevalensi 1-15 kasus dalam 10.000 anak, 1-3 kasus dalam 10.000 kelahiran di negara berkembang dan 1.7 – 14.7 kasus dalam 10.000 anak di Asia. Tujuan tatalaksana yaitu membersihkan katarak secepat mungkin untuk mencegah taerjadinya ambliopia.Tujuan : Untuk melaporkan tatalaksana kasus katarak kongenital dengan penyulit Congenital Rubella Syndrome (CRS).Deskripsi Kasus : Seorang anak perempuan uisa 11 tahun dibawa berobat ke poliklinik Pediatrik Oftalmologi dan Strabismus RS Dr. Zainoel Abidin Banda Aceh dengan keluhan utama terdapat bintik putih pada kedua mata sejak lahir. Pasien di diagnosa katarak kongenital dan dilakukan pembedahan yang meliputi aspirasi irigasi, kapsulotomi posterior primer dan vitrektomi anterior dalam pembiusan umum.Kesimpulan : Tujuan tatalaksana kasus katarak kongenital adalah mencegah ambliopia dengan membersihkan katarak sesegera mungkin sehingga prognosis penglihatan lebih baik. Pemilihan tehnik operasi dan rehabilitasi optik merupakan hal penting untuk mencapai fungsi visual yang baik.
Childhood glaucoma is a rare disorder that occurs from birth until teenage years caused by an abnormality of aqueous humor pathways. About 50–70% of Peters' anomaly is accompanied by secondary childhood glaucoma. The presence of glaucoma will affect the prognosis. We reported the evaluation and treatment of secondary childhood glaucoma due to Peters’ anomaly. A 5 months-old boy was presented with the complaint of a enlarged left eye since 3 months old. The complaint was accompanied by a watering eye and frequently closed upon light exposure. The left eye looked opaquer than contralateral. Examination under anesthesia showed that the intraocular pressure (IOP) was 35 mmHg in the left eye and the corneal diameter was 14 mm. Other findings were keratopathy, diffuse corneal edema, buphthalmos, shallow anterior chamber, anterior synechiae, and linear slit shaped pupils in the nasal region. Patient was treated with ophthalmic timolol maleate which was later followed by trabeculectomy. After 1 week post-surgery, IOP assessment by palpation suggested the right eye within normal range while the IOP of left eye was higger than normal. Blepharospasm, epiphora, photophobia, bleb on superior, subconjunctiva bleeding, buphthalmos, keratopathy, minimal corneal edema, anterior chamber with shallow image, and posterior synechia were found in left eye anterior segment. In conclusion, trabeculotomy and trabeculectomy are recommended if there is no reduction of IOP observed after receiving timolol maleate therapy. The choice of surgical management is dependent on the feasibility of the protocol.
Cataract is one of the leading treatable causes of visual impairment in children. Visual rehabilitation is crucial for the development of good visual function after cataract surgery in children. The research aimd to describe post-operative Predictive Refractive Error (PRE) in congenital and developmental cataracts in Cicendo National Eye Hospital from January 2017 to December 2018. This is a retrospective analytic observational study from medical records. We found 107 eyes of 62 children with congenital and developmental cataracts had had cataract surgery and primary implantation of Intraocular Lens (IOL) in Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Unit, Cicendo National Eye Hospital. The patients were divided into two groups, with axial length (AXL) of ≤ 24 mm and > 24 mm. The paired t-test was used to compare Predictive Error (PE) in SRK/T, SRK II, and Showa SRK formula. Mean age at surgery was 6.7 ± 4.0 years. Ninety-five eyes had AXL ≤ 24 mm, and 12 eyes had AXL > 24 mm. Prediction Error from patients with AXL ≤ 24 mm was 0.29 D, and from patients with AXL > 24 mm was 2.40 D in SRK/T formula (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference between PE and Absolute Predictive Error (APE) in SRK/T, SRK II, and Showa SRK in patients with AXL > 24 mm (P > 0.05). SRK/T is the most predictable formula in patients with AXL ≤ 24 mm. There is no significant difference in patients with AXL > 24 mm in all formulas.
