Parasite (2019) is a film by Bong Joon-ho that won the Academy Award. In addition, this film that depicts social inequality in South Korea is considered as the point of the rise of Asian films in global cinema. This film presents an implicit message or meaning about meritocracy and its implications and the discourse it carries. Through Roland Barthes' semiotic theory, the researcher found that the meritocracy in the Parasite film occurred in work, education, and achievement or appreciation. The denotation shown in the scene shows the presence of body gestures, words and actions that indicate belief in the meritocracy experienced by the characters. Whereas in connotation, there is a system that exists in the environment of figures that shows meritocracy. Finally, in the myth section, there is a discourse brought by the meritocracy who worked on the film. The discourse is a narrative about neoliberalism and the impact of global capitalism. The results of this study can strengthen the existing theme in the film Parasite, which is about social inequality. Structural poverty and social classes can be seen at the root of the problem. Poor characters believe that with hard work they will achieve success, while rich characters believe that relationships or beliefs are more important than hard work. This contradiction then gives rise to myths that are believed by one another. The meritocracy system which operates at the level of this myth actually widens social inequality and makes it difficult for the lower classes to carry out social mobility. This research examines how a country like South Korea cannot be separated from global capitalism with its neoliberalism which destroys social relations between communities.
