ResumoIntrodução: Diante dos baixos índices de cura e sobrevida do câncer bucal, é crucial que se diagnostique essa doença precocemente. Objetivo: Avaliar o grau de conhecimento de cirurgiões dentistas a respeito do câncer bucal. Casuística e Métodos: A pesquisa foi realizada por meio da aplicação de um questionário a um grupo de cirurgiões dentistas, exercendo atividades clínicas no município de Fernandópolis, SP, Brasil. Resultados: De 124 questionários distribuídos, o índice de resposta à pesquisa foi de 31,5% (n=39), sendo que a maioria dos participantes foi do sexo feminino 51,3% (n=20). Do total da amostra, 48,7% (n=19) afirmaram encaminhar o paciente com lesão suspeita de malignidade, para um dentista especializado. Dos entrevistados, 82,1% (n=32) afirmaram que carcinoma espinocelular é a lesão maligna mais comum na boca, e 48,7% (n=19) consideraram, corretamente, a língua como a estrutura anatômica mais comumente afetada pelo câncer de boca. A maioria dos participantes 76,9% (n=30) apontou a úlcera indolor como aspecto clínico inicial do câncer de boca, e 74,4% (n=29) consideraram a leucoplasia como a lesão bucal mais propensa a evoluir com malignidade. Todos os participantes atribuíram corretamente a ocorrência do câncer de boca ao tabagismo e 97,4% (n=38) atribuíram a ocorrência da doença ao etilismo. Conclusão: O conhecimento dos cirurgiões dentistas participantes nesta pesquisa foi considerado satisfatório, especialmente no que diz respeito ao diagnóstico clínico da doença. No entanto, ainda é necessário trabalhar na conscientização e treinamento adequado desta classe de profissionais no que diz respeito a esta malignidade.Descritores: Neoplasias Bucais; Cirurgiões; Conhecimento. AbstractIntroduction: Due to the low rate of cure and survival from oral cancer, it is crucial to make an early diagnose of this disease. Objective: To evaluate the extent of the dental surgeons' knowledge regarding oral cancer. Patients and Methods: A group of dental surgeons performing clinical practice activity in the city of Fernandópolis, São Paulo State, Brazil answered a structured questionnaire. Results: Of the 124 questionnaires distributed, the return rate was 31.5% (n=39). Most of the respondents 51.3% (n=20) were women. Of the total sample, 48.7% (n=19) of the dental surgeons stated to refer the patient with injury suspected of malignancies to a specialized dentist. Of the respondents, 82.1% (n=32) reported that squamous cell carcinoma was the most common malignancy in the oral cavity, and 49.7% (n=19) implicitly acknowledged the tongue as the most commonly affected anatomical structure by oral cancer. Most of the dental surgeons 76.9% (n=30) pointed the painless ulcer as the initial clinical feature of the oral cancer, while 74.4% (n=29) considered the leukoplakia as the most likely lesion to evolve with malignancy. All the participants correctly attributed the occurrence of oral cancer to smoking habit, and 97.4% (n=38) related the lesion to alcoholism.
