Designing teaching material is the process of selecting, adapting and evaluating of teaching based on specific terms of reference. Need Analysis is very important before designing teaching materials for English for Specific Purpose. The study aims at exploring the learning needs of 50 nursing students, and designing ESP materials for nurses based on Need Analysis. Need Analysis in this study is categorized as Target situation Analysis, Present Situation Analysis, Deficiency Analysis, Strategy Analysis, Constraint Analysis, Pedagogic Need Analysis, and Subjective Need Analysis (Lowi, 2009). The study uses quantitative and qualitative methods. The findings describe the real needs of students of ESP for nurses, the lecturers' view points on the practice of ESP instructions, and descriptions of ESP for nurses used in English speaking countries. The results are very significant for designers of ESP of various fields for they reflect the real needs of nursing students. It is suggested that Nursing English textbooks should be based on the Need Analysis by ESP designers.
The study of politeness in education setting interaction has increased in last decades. However, the investigation of politeness strategies in lecturer-student interaction using WhatsApp is relatively unexplored. Therefore, this study aims to explore politeness strategies used by a lecturer and students in virtual communication using WhatsApp during thesis consultation. The researcher applied a mixed method: qualitative and quantitative research to discover the politeness phenomena in WhatsApp interaction. The participants of the study were 10 undergraduate students of English Department, University of HKBP Nommensen, and a lecturer as their thesis consultant. The data of the study consist of 50 screenshots of WhatsApp chats thesis consultation. The results show that all four types of politeness strategies were found in lecture-students interaction. The politeness strategies used by the lecturer and students differ greatly. The lecturer dominantly employed bald on-record (30. 93%) with the most imperative sentences realization; on the other hand, the students tend to use positive politeness strategy (23.20%) with the most greetings realization. This demonstrates that lecturers keep their distance when communicating, whereas students attempt to “get closer” during the interaction. The different politeness strategy choices are caused by the different power and social status (position) factors between lecturers and students. The findings of this study also show that the politeness strategies chosen by lecturers and students are not always consistent with previous similar studies.
This research was conducted with the aim of finding out the difficulties that were felt by high students in answering reading comprehension questions on the TOEFL test. The method used in this research is qualitative method. This research was conducted on high school students who had taken the TOEFL test. From the results of this study it was found that the biggest problem in reading comprehension in the TOEFL test was due to the lack of interest in reading high school students so they would feel bored by seeing the text in front of them and it was still difficult for high school students to find the meaning of the text due to lack of vocabulary, and lack of practice to answer questions related to reading comprehension with the lack of practice, they think that the time to answer questions is not enough. So from the research conducted it is expected to overcome these difficulties, high school students must increase their practice of reading comprehension questions both at home and at the course, and must increase interest in reading and increase vocabulary so that it is easier to work on problems in the reading comprehension section. This study was conducted to test whether Semantic Mapping Technique affects midwifery students’ technical vocabularies at the University of Prima Indonesia. Semantic Mapping is a technique of visual for the expansion of vocabularies and knowledge extension by displaying in words of categories related to each other. The total of 40 midwifery students in the academic year of 2018/2019 was taken as the research samples by applying two groups for pre-test and post-test experimental research design. The experimental group was taught by Semantic Mapping Technique while the control group was taught by conventional teaching technique of vocabulary. The research data were then analyzed using T-test. In this research, a multiple-choice test was used as the research instrument for collecting data. Both the experimental and control groups were asked to answer 50 test items in Pre-test and Post-test. The research data were then analyzed statistically by using T-test formula with the assistance of the SPSS program. The study revealed that the value of T-observed (4.41) was higher than the value of T-table (2.02) at the level of significance 0.05 with the degree of freedom (df) 40. It means that the alternative hypothesis stating that Semantic Mapping technique has a significant effect on midwifery students’ technical vocabularies is significantly accepted. By so doing, this technique can be considered to be used to increase students’ vocabularies.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
