Flavonoids are natural products widely distributed in the plant kingdom and form one of the main classes of secondary metabolites. They display a large range of structures and ecological signiicance (e.g., such as the colored pigments in many lower petals), serve as chemotaxonomic marker compounds and have a variety of biological activities. Therefore, they have been extensively investigated but the interest in them is still increasing. The topics that will be discussed in this chapter describe the regulation of lavonoid biosynthesis, the roles of lavonoids in lowers, fruits and roots and mechanisms involved in pollination and their speciic functions in the plant.
Recebido em 17/3/08; aceito em 24/5/09; publicado na web em 6/11/09 TOXICITY AND ANTIOXIDANT ACTIVITY OF FLAVONOIDS FROM Lonchocarpus filipes ROOT BARK. The phytochemical investigation of dichloromethane extract from root bark of Lonchocarpus filipes Benth (Leguminosae) afforded four flavonoids including three dibenzoylmethane derivatives rarely found in nature. The structures were established based on their spectral data ( 1 H and 13 C NMR, 2D-NMR) as being: lanceolatin B (1), pongamol (2), (E)-7-O-methylpongamol (3) and (E)-9-O-methylpongamol (4). Compound (4) is described herein for the first time as a natural product. The extracts and the isolated compounds (1), (2) and (3) displayed high toxicity in the brine shrimp lethality assay. Only compound (2) showed antioxidant activity using a DPPH radical scavenging assay. This is the first report on the phytochemical study of Lonchocarpus filipes. Keywords: Lonchocarpus filipes; flavonoids; dibenzoylmethanes.
Phytochemical investigation of the ripe fruits of Solanum caavurana Vell. (Solanaceae) afforded a novel steroidal alkaloid with spirosolane-type skeleton, named as caavuranamide, together with the alkaloids 4-tomatiden-3-one and 5α-tomatidan-3-one. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic methods. The antiproliferative and antimicrobial activities for the ethanolic extract, sub-fractions obtained from partition and acid-base treatment were also evaluated. Caavuranamide showed antibacterial activity similar to the chloramphenicol positive control against Rhodococcus equi.
Este trabalho teve como objetivo a caracterização nutricional (umidade, proteínas, lipídeos, cinzas e açúcarestotais), quantificação do Valor Energético Total (VET) e determinação do teor de carotenoides totais dosfrutos de cajuzinho do cerrado (Anacardium humile A.St.-Hil.), curriola (Pouteria ramiflora (Mart.) Radlk) einharé (Brosimum gaudichaudii Trécul), do Cerrado mato grossense.
In Brazil, there is a large diversity of species of small edible fruits that are considered sources of nutrients and functional properties. They present a high innovation domain for the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries due to their health-promoting properties. Edible fruits from Brosimum gaudichaudii (Moraceae) are widely consumed and used in folk medicine and in feed by the population of the Brazilian Cerrado. Nevertheless, detailed information on the chemical fingerprint, antiradical activity and safety aspects of these fruits is still unknown. Thus, the aim of this work was to investigate the bioactive compounds of hydroethanolic extracts of fruits from Brosimum gaudichaudii using high-performance liquid chromatography combined with mass spectrometry using electrospray ionization (HPLC ESI-MS). Eighteen different compounds, including flavonoids, coumarins, arylbenzofurans, terpenoids, stilbenes, xanthones and esters, were detected. Moreover, the study indicated that the hydroethanolic extract of fruits from B. gaudichaudii presented low scavenging activity against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radicals (IC 50 > 800 μg mL À 1 ) and was cytotoxic (IC 50 < 30 μg mL À 1 ) in Chinese hamster ovary cells (CHOÀ K1) by an in vitro assay. This is the first report of the chemical profile, antioxidant activity and cytotoxic properties of the hydroethanolic extract of fruits from B. gaudichaudii.
isolated from a dichloromethane extract from the root bark of Muellera filipes (Benth.) M.J. Silva & A.M.G. Azevedo, along with two dibenzoylmethane derivatives, 2'-methoxy-8-(α,α-dimethylallyl)-furano-(4'',5'':3',4')-dibenzoylmethane and 2'-hydroxy-8-(α,α-dimethylallyl)-2",2"-dimethylpyrano-(5",6":3',4')-dibenzoylmethane; one flavanone, isolonchocarpin and one flavone, pongaglabrone, which had been previously isolated from other sources. The molecular structures of the new dibenzoylmethane derivatives were determined by analysis of their spectral data (1 H and 13 C nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), 2D-NMR, NOE (nuclear Overhauser effect) and HRMS (high resolution mass spectrometry). The known compounds were identified using 1D experiments and comparison with spectral data from the literature. 2'-O-(3'',3''-Dimethylallyl)-8-(α,α-dimethylallyl)-furano-(4'',5'':3'4')-dibenzoylmethane displayed strong activity against the human cancer cell line OVCAR-3 (ovarian), and 2'-methoxy-8-(α,α-dimethylallyl)-furano-(4'',5'':3',4')-dibenzoylmethane showed high selectivity for cell lines NCI-H460 (lung) and UACC-62 (melanoma).
