A sociedade romana produziu estátuas abundantemente, como argumenta Stewart (2003:118). As suas funções eram diversas e vários os seus propósitos. Neste artigo, buscaremos apresentar a importância político-cultural das estátuas imperiais na sociedade romana do século IV d.C. a partir da compreensão da gravidade dos acontecimentos ocorridos durante a deflagração de um levante que ficou conhecido, na historiografia, como Levante das Estátuas. Neste levante, estátuas imperiais foram destruídas. Para tanto, utilizaremos a documentação legada por um presbítero, João Crisóstomo, que pronunciou, tradicionalmente, 21 homilias que a historiografia vinculou ao Levante das Estátuas.
O Levante das Estátuas foi um violento conflito ocorrido em 387, na cidade de Antioquia, a metrópole da província da Síria. A documentação escrita sobre o acontecimento é abundante e, por isso, somos capazes de conhecê-lo segundo diferentes perspectivas. Os principais testemunhos sobre a sedição são as XXI Homilias sobre as estátuas para o povo de Antioquia, de João Crisóstomo, e as Orações sobre o Levante das Estátuas, de Libânio. Neste artigo, pretendemos refletir sobre a presença feminina e seu signifcado dentro de tais narrativas, assunto que tem recebido pouca atenção dos historiadores. João Crisóstomo, por exemplo, invoca a imagem de uma suplicante ao falar em defesa de sua comunidade. Libânio também menciona mulheres agindo de tal maneira, como suplicantes. Uma referência feminina emblemática, no contexto do Levante, é a imperatriz Flacila, primeira esposa de Teodósio, cuja estátua foi alvo da fúria dos rebeldes. Com base nos testemunhos de João Crisóstomo e de Libânio pretendemos investigar o papel desempenhado pelas mulheres na revolta. Também buscaremos compreender o signifcado da destruição da estátua da imperatriz, uma vez que, em Roma, as imagens eram tidas como representações tangíveis dos próprios imperadores e dos membros de sua família, motivo pelo qual aqueles que contra elas atentassem poderiam se tornar réus de crime de maiestas.
A história do Egito Antigo transcendeu seu tempo e espaço e se tornou um conhecimento popularizado na contemporaneidade. Isso não significa, entretanto, que o Egito deixou de ser um enigma para nós. Ainda há muito o que se compreender sobre a história do Egito Antigo e o tema da economia egípcia tem se tornado um importante lugar de debates efervescentes e profícuos no decorrer das últimas décadas. De fato, na História do Egito Antigo, o estudo de elementos que recaem sob a esfera da economia – como, por exemplos, os estudos sobre transporte e comunicação, agricultura, sistema monetário e mercado, trabalho, manufatura – oferece importantes e elucidativas informações acerca das particularidades não somente da economia mas da sociedade egípcia antiga como um todo uma vez que não há como conceber as sociedades do mundo antigo como uma realidade que possa ser concebida apenas pela dimensão do ‘econômico’ distinta do ‘social’ e dos âmbitos da ‘política’ e do ‘cultural’. Não obstante, a economia do Egito antigo ainda permanece uma área de estudo difícil. De acordo com uma historiografia especializada, isso se deve, em primeiro lugar, à existência de algumas divergências entre os estudiosos sobre o recurso ou não às teorias econômicas modernas para se explicar a economia egípcia antiga e, em segundo lugar, em razão da ausência de evidências ou ainda pela dificuldade de interpretação das documentações que, caracteristicamente, segundo alguns autores, são permeadas pelas ausências de determinados dados ou apresentam imprecisões (BLEIBERG, 2007). Dada essas circunstâncias, optamos por abordar a temática da “Economia e sociedade no Egito Faraônico” em termos de uma reflexão teórico‑metodológica, num primeiro momento, e histórica, num segundo momento, de modo que possamos compreender a construção e escrita de uma ‘economia’ considerada ‘egípcia’ na ‘sociedade’ do contexto do Egito ‘Faraônico’.
O exílio sempre foi uma forma de punição adotada pelos romanos antigos. Na República e no contexto do Principado são vários os casos de banimentos de senadores. Na Antiguidade Tardia, quase não temos notícias de casos de exílio senatorial presentes na historiografia especializada. Os exílios mais evidentes, mais explorados e estudados, neste contexto, são os casos de banimento episcopal, em especial, durante o governo de Constâncio II (337‑361). Não obstante, os exílios senatoriais continuaram a ocorrer mesmo no contexto da Antiguidade Tardia, embora estes não tenham sido tema de estudo dos historiadores. No Código Teodosiano, não encontramos evidências precisas sobre exílios direcionados a senadores, excetuando o estatuto 14, 10, 3, sobre vestimentas militares utilizadas inapropriadamente, que menciona especificamente o uso de trajes militares por senadores, que é proibido por este estatuto. Não obstante, mesmo com esparsa evidência, neste documento, sob o caso senatorial, nos dedicaremos no espaço desse artigo, à reflexão acerca dos exílios previstos no Código Teodosiano, de modo a compreender os exílios senatoriais como parte do fenômeno do banimento na Antiguidade Tardia.
