IntroduçãoAo longo da história da humanidade ou dos grupos culturais específicos, já se observam a produção e o consumo do álcool. Não há praticamente nenhum grupo humano contemporâneo que desconheça o álcool ou o etanol. O uso de bebidas alcoólicas é milenar devido à sua ligação com o "divino", na explicação de fenômenos não entendidos racionalmente. O ato de beber pode ser colocado na dimensão do sobrenatural: os indivíduos alcoolizados são eximidos de qualquer responsabilidade, quando os maus espíritos tomam posse de seu corpo.No século XIX a produção industrial se intensificou, assim como a comercialização e a distribuição de bebidas, aumentando o consumo e os problemas daí advindos. O uso do álcool foi difundido nas sociedades, sendo popularmente considerado benéfico: como um alimento, medicamento ou hábito prazeiroso.O alcoolismo tem sido considerado um dos mais sérios problemas de saúde pública em quase todo o mundo e foi definido pela organização Mundial de Saúde-OMS como "estado psíquico e físico resultante da ingestão de álcool, caracterizado por reações de comportamento e outras que sempre incluem uma compulsão para ingerir álcool de modo contínuo ou periódico, a fim de experimentar seus efeitos psíquicos e, por vezes, evitar o desconforto de sua falta; a tolerância pode ou não estar presente".As novas tendências conceituais preconizam o abandono do termo alcoolismo pela conotação estritamente médica que representa, visto ser um fenômeno de natureza multifatorial. A valorização do alcoolismo tem-se destacado em detrimento das causas orgânicas ou psíquicas individuais. A determinação social do alcoolismo ocorre em virtude de ser democrática -não discrimina pobres nem ricos e atinge países com grandes diferenças políti-cas.
