Palavras-chave: características reprodutivas, correlação genética, modelo animal, perímetro escrotal Genetic Correlation Between Scrotal Circumference and Some Reproductive Traits in Nellore CattleABSTRACT -Data of scrotal circumference and female reproductive traits were analyzed to estimate heritabilities and genetic correlations. Data were obtained from 11 farms by the same company, located in the States of São Paulo, Mato Grosso do Sul and Goiás. Variance components were estimated by restricted maximum likelihood using two-trait animal models. For traits with repeated measures, two mathematical models were used: including or not the permanent environment of the cow. Analyses that not included the permanent environment of the cow showed the following heritabilities 0.51, 0.12, 0.17, 0.06 and 0.13 for scrotal circumference (SC), age at first calving (AFC), days to calving (DC), calving interval (CI) and gestation length (GL), respectively. In these analyses, the genetic correlations were: -0.22 (SC x AFC), -0.04 (SC x DC), 0.10 (SC x CI) and -0.04 (SC x GL). When permanent environment of the cow were included in the model, heritabilities of DC (0.07) and GL (0.06) were smaller, indicating that models without permanent environment of the cow can overestimate the additive genetic variance of these two traits. However, the CI parameters did not change with the inclusion of permanent enviro...
Genetic analysis of reproductive traits in Nelore cattleAbstract The objective of this paper was to estimate heritability coefficients for age at first calving, days to calving (DC), gestation length (GL) and scrotal circumference (SC) as well as genetic correlations between scrotal circumference and these reproductive traits measured in the females, in Nelore cattle. The age at first calving was evaluated in females mated for the first time around 14 months of age (AFC14) and in females mated for the first time around 26 months of age (AFC26). Datasets varying from 6,030 to 94,637 observations were analyzed. Analyses were processed using two-trait animal models. Heritability coefficients obtained for reproductive traits were: 0.19 (AFC14), 0.02 (AFC26), 0.07 (DC), 0.26 (GL), and 0.47 (SC). The genetic correlations were: -0.39 (SC and AFC14), -0.19 (SC and AFC26), 0.02 (SC and DC); and 0.02 (SC and GL). It was concluded that age at first calving may be used as a selection criterion for sexual precocity and that the selection of bulls for SC can result in daughters with decreased age at first calving. The low heritability obtained for DC, associated to its low genetic correlation with SC, suggest the need of studies on other traits to evaluate female fertility.
Festuca rubra subsp. pruinosa is a perennial grass that inhabits sea cliffs of the Atlantic coasts of Europe. In this unhospitable environment plants grow in rock crevices and are exposed to abiotic stress factors such as low nutrient availability, wind, and salinity. Festuca rubra subsp. pruinosa is a host of the fungal endophyte Epichloë festucae, which colonizes aerial organs, but its root mycobiota is unknown. The culturable endophytic mycobiota of FRP roots was surveyed in a set of 105 plants sampled at five populations in marine cliffs from the northern coast of Spain. In total, 135 different fungal taxa were identified, 17 of them occurred in more than 10% of plants and in two or more populations. Seven taxa belonging to Fusarium, Diaporthe, Helotiales, Drechslera, Slopeiomyces, and Penicillium appeared to be constituents of the core microbiome of Festuca rubra subsp. pruinosa roots because they occurred in more than 20% of the plants analyzed, and at three or more populations. Most fungal strains analyzed (71.8%) were halotolerant. The presence of Epichloë festucae in aboveground tissue was detected in 65.7% of the plants, but its presence did not seem to significantly affect the structure of the core or other root microbiota, when compared to that of plants free of this endophyte. When plants of the grass Lolium perenne were inoculated with fungal strains obtained from Festuca rubra subsp. pruinosa roots, a Diaporthe strain significantly promoted leaf biomass production under normal and saline (200 mM NaCl) watering regimes. These results suggest that the core mycobiome of Festuca rubra subsp. pruinosa could have a role in host plant adaptation, and might be useful for the improvement of agricultural grasses.
The objectives of the current study were to assess the feasibility of using stayability traits to improve fertility of Nellore cows and to examine the genetic relationship among the stayabilities at different ages. Stayability was defined as whether a cow calved every year up to the age of 5 (Stay5), 6 (Stay6), or 7 (Stay7) yr of age or more, given that she was provided the opportunity to breed. Data were analyzed based on a maximum a posteriori probit threshold model to predict breeding values on the liability scale, whereas the Gibbs sampler was used to estimate variance components. The EBV were obtained using all animals included in the pedigree or bulls with at least 10 daughters with stayability observations, and average genetic trends were obtained in the liability and transformed to the probability scale. Additional analyses were performed to study the genetic relationship among stayability traits, which were compared by contrasting results in terms of EBV and the average genetic superiority as a function of the selected proportion of sires. Heritability estimates and SD were 0.25 +/- 0.02, 0.22 +/- 0.03, and 0.28 +/- 0.03 for Stay5, Stay6, and Stay7, respectively. Average genetic trends, by year, were 0.51, 0.34, and 0.38% for Stay5, Stay6, and Stay7, respectively. Estimates of EBV SD, in the probability scale, for all animals included in the pedigree and for bulls with at least 10 daughters with stayability observations were 7.98 and 12.95, 6.93 and 11.38, and 8.24 and 14.30% for Stay5, Stay6, and Stay7, respectively. A reduction in the average genetic superiorities in Stay7 would be expected if the selection were based on Stay5 or Stay6. Nonetheless, the reduction in EPD, depending on selection intensity, is on average 0.74 and 1.55%, respectively. Regressions of the sires' EBV for Stay5 and Stay6 on the sires' EBV for Stay7 confirmed these results. The heritability and genetic trend estimates for all stayability traits indicate that it is possible to improve fertility with selection based on a threshold analysis of stayability. The SD of EBV for stayability traits show that there is adequate genetic variability among animals to justify inclusion of stayability as a selection criterion. The potential linear relationship among stayability traits indicates that selection for improved female traits would be more effective by having predictions on the Stay5 trait.
Influence of Sire x Herd Interaction on the Estimation of Correlation between Direct and Maternal Genetic Effects in Nellore CattleABSTRACT -Sire x herd interactions were studied in 30,789 records of birth (BW) and weaning weight (WW) and weight gain from weaning to 18 months of age (G345) of Nellore cattle born from 1984 to 1994 in twelve farms located in three states of central and southeastern Brazil, with a total of 48.495 animals in pedigree. Sire x herd interaction was considered as a random effect in single trait and two traits animal models using MTDFREML. This effect was important for BW (6% of the phenotypic variance) and it both affected variance and covariance components and, consequently, genetic parameters. The effect was smaller for WW (around 1% of the phenotypic variance), but influenced the estimates of (co) variance components. For G345, Sire x Herd effect was small. Likelihood tests showed that this effect was significant for all traits. This study showed that genetic correlations between direct x maternal effects are close to zero or even positive if sire x herd interaction is fitted in the model, and always negative if it is not.
