Study of stayability in Nellore cows using a threshold model1

Abstract: The objectives of the current study were to assess the feasibility of using stayability traits to improve fertility of Nellore cows and to examine the genetic relationship among the stayabilities at different ages. Stayability was defined as whether a cow calved every year up to the age of 5 (Stay5), 6 (Stay6), or 7 (Stay7) yr of age or more, given that she was provided the opportunity to breed. Data were analyzed based on a maximum a posteriori probit threshold model to predict breeding values on the liabilit… Show more

“…In agreement with the findings obtained in this research, Martinez et al (2005); Rasali et al (2005) and Van Melis et al (2007) also reported values of moderate magnitude -0.25, 0.23 and 0.22, respectively, for STAY using a threshold model. Jamrozik et al (2013) presented heritabilities for STAY to consecutive calvings in Canadian Simmental cows ranging from 0.12 to 0.36.…”

“…On some farms, according to 'Associaçã o Nacional de Criadores e Pesquisadores' (data not published), this was already occurring or came as a response correlating this trait with another that was undergoing selection within the herd (indirect selection). Van Melis et al (2007) reported that the mean genetic value for stayability in the herd increased with time.…”

“…Cows' longevity, expressed as their continuing presence in the herd, is an economically important trait that is directly related to the yield of the meat production system through its relationship with production efficiency (Van Melis et al, 2007). Inclusion of this trait in genetic -E-mail: danisio@unesp.fcav.br evaluation programs may make it possible to select bulls that have female offspring with a greater likelihood of remaining productive in the herd for a longer period of time or for a time established by the producer.…”

“…HP at 14 months is the probability that a cow conceives after the end of the breeding season when exposed to a bull or inseminated (Doyle et al, 1996;Evans et al, 1999;Eler et al, 2002). In contrast, STAY is the probability of a cow to remain in the herd until a specific age, given the opportunity to reach this age (Hudson and Van Vleck, 1981;Silva et al, 2006;Van Melis et al, 2007). Both the traits are binary, and a value of 1 is attributed for success and a value of 0 for failure.…”
