Malone meurt pertence ao período mais produtivo da carreira literária de Beckett (os anos subsequentes à Segunda Guerra Mundial). É o segundo romance da "trilogia" iniciada por Molloy e concluída por L'Innommable, escrita entre maio de 1947 e janeiro de 1950.Entre Malone meurt e L'Innommable, Beckett escreveu En attendant Godot, sua peça de maior sucesso. Beckett trabalha em Malone Dies nos meses seguintes à conclusão da peça Fin de partie, em fevereiro de 1955. A versão francesa do romance é publicada em 1951; Malone Dies é de 1956. A ideia de trilogia pode ser contestada uma vez que não há continuidade entre os livros.
