RESUMENEl presente trabajo comparte una propuesta teórica para explorar el proceso de formación de las aspiraciones educativas de los hijos de inmigrantes mexicanos desde la óptica de la vida familiar, tomando en consideración distintos enfoques teóricos. El artículo parte de la aseveración de que «la familia es un punto estratégico para entender las dinámicas de los flujos de la inmigración (legal e ilegal) y del proceso de adaptación del inmigrante» (Rumbaut 1997: 4). La propuesta de análisis plantea abordar el objeto de estudio desde la dinámica interna de la vida familiar. Asimismo, es importante tomar en cuenta el contexto social y cultural del lugar de origen de las familias inmigrantes y el contexto de recepción.Palabras clave: aspiraciones educativas, hijos de inmigrantes, vida familiar, enfoque teórico.
Este trabajo examina de forma comparativa y longitudinal los logros educativos que han obtenido dos muestras de jóvenes: los que se quedaron con sus familias en su lugar de origen en México, y los del mismo lugar que emigraron a California o nacieron del otro lado de la frontera en los Estados Unidos. Los pocos estudios longitudinales de las trayectorias de hijos de inmigrantes, como CILS en Estados Unidos e ILSEG en España, comparan grupos de jóvenes en el mismo país. El presente estudio, denominado Estudio Longitudinal de Logros Educativos (ELLE) en México y Estados Unidos, no sólo compara con métodos cualitativos y cuantitativos la situación de jóvenes y de sus padres del mismo origen en dos países durante períodos de crisis entre 2008-2012, sino también compara familias de inmigrantes en California en calidad de indocumentados, documentados y ciudadanos americanos.
Resumen: En este artículo, el autor analiza el proceso de adaptación de los hijos de inmigrantes mexicanos que residen en California, Estados Unidos. A partir del proceso de adaptación se analizan las determinantes estructurales, culturales y educativas que impactan a los hijos de inmigrantes en el desarrollo de las aspiraciones educativas y su relación con la vida escolar de los estudiantes. El trabajo explora el proceso de adaptación social de los hijos desde la óptica de la teoría de la edad de la migración y el lugar de nacimiento-propuesta por Rubén Rumbaut-. Asimismo, analiza el interés por la educación, así como el esfuerzo y compromiso escolar de los hijos desde su propia visión sobre sus aspiraciones y expectativas educativas, a partir de factores estructurales y del entorno familiar. El trabajo explora el impacto de la estructura familiar, sexo, estatus socioeconómico de la familia y el lugar de nacimiento de los jóvenes, a partir del rendimiento y el promedio numérico de las notas académicas obtenidas (GPA). El estudio se aborda a partir de una muestra recogida en trabajo de campo durante el ciclo escolar 2008-2009 en distintas ciudades del norte y sur de California.
