Summary Functions of the omasum in small ruminants: II. Fermentation rate and DNA content In samples from the reticulum and omasum of 3 goats and 4 sheep microbial fermentation without (endogenous) and with excess of readily fermented carbohydrates (substrate) was determined manometrically in vitro and the DNA content was taken as a criterion of microbial cell mass. Reticulum and omasum samples from sheep showed a dry matter content of 12.1% and 6.1%, respectively, and a DNA content of 4.06 and 6.02 mg/g dry matter. Endogenous fermentation in the omasum of sheep, in relation to dry matter, was 60% of that in the reticulum. When related to the DNA content the values were 56% for goats and 41% for sheep. When excess of carbohydrate was supplied the fermentation rate rose in the omasal contents of goats 6.8 times and in sheep 5.5 times. When related to DNA this meant that 79% and 76%, respectively, of the substrate fermentation in the reticular contents was reached. These findings show that the amount of microbial cell mass (DNA) in the omasal contents is about 50% higher than in the rumen. The fermentation rate in the omasum is substrate‐limited and is only half as great as in the reticulum.
Summary Functions of the omasum of small ruminants: III. Absorption of water After prolonged infusion of polyethylene glycol (PEG) into the rumen of four sheep provided with a sleeve in the omasal‐abomasal orifice and of two goats with omasal cannulae water absorption in the omasum was measured. In some experiments an oesophageal saliva collector was used. In the sheep 29.5 ± 22.6 ml/h or 13.3 ± 6.8% of the fluid entering the omasum was absorbed. In the goats absorption was 11.9 ± 6.8%. With increasing flow of digesta through the omasum water absorption rose significantly in ml/h but the rise varied considerably in the individual sheep. The percentage of water absorbed did not change significantly but some reduction with increasing flow was indicated. Water absorption increased very significantly with increase in absorption of Na, short chain fatty acids and K. The permeability of the omasal mucosa of the sheep for tritium‐labelled H2O was about 1.5 times greater than in the rumen. It is assumed that this difference is brought about by the thinner propria mucosae of the omasum. When related to the mucosal area (considering the villi) it seems that water absorption in the omasum per unit of surface area is as great as in the rumen and reticulum. 29,5 ± 22,6 m...
