Functional capacity is a complex concept that includes basic activities of daily living (BADL), instrumental activities of daily living (IADL), 1) and advanced activities. 2) Since inadequacies in BADL affect daily activities, work performance, and leisure activities, BADL is one of the most important indicators of success to define the skill level, demonstrate the effectiveness of rehabilitation, and determine a person's ability to perform activities of daily living. 3,4) The BADL may decline due to age, a specific disease, or a variety of factors such as decreased muscle strength, muscle atrophy, degenerative changes in joints, impaired neuromuscular coordination, loss of vision, and postural changes. 5) BADL represent the activities necessary for self-care (e.g., bathing, dressing, feeding, etc.) while IADL represent the activities that allow independence in social life. 6,7) In addition to some BADL, Background: The Lawton Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL) scale is the most widely used scale for the assessment of IADL in the elderly population. The aim of this study was to adapt the Lawton IADL Scale in Turkish and to investigate the validity and the reliability of the scale in older adults. Methods: A total of 80 participants with a mean age of 71.6±5.8 years were included in the study. The independent living skills of the older adults were measured using Lawton IADL, Hodkinson Mental Test, Functional Independence Scale, Barthel Index, Katz Index, and visual analog scale. Lawton IADL was translated into Turkish, validated by professional reviewers, translated back into English, and then tested. Cronbach's alpha was used to measure reliability in a group of 34 participants and test-retest was performed 1 week after the first test. Pearson correlation analysis was used to show the relationship between Lawton IADL and other scales and indexes. Results: Internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha) value was 0.843 for the whole scale. The intraclass correlation coefficient value of the scale was 0.915. Conclusion: These results confirm that the Turkish version of the Lawton IADL scale has excellent reliability and validity.

In the aging process, changes in body images are ignored along with the decrease in physical activity in older women. Therefore, this research aimed to investigate the relationship between body mass index (BMI), body perception, and physical activity level in postmenopausal female elderly living in a rest home. This descriptive study was carried out among fifty postmenopausal older women residing in Fethiye Rest home. The physical activities undertaken over seven days by the older women were assessed using the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Height (m), and body weight (kg) were used to calculate BMI (kg/m²), Body Perception Scale was used to determine the level of body image perception. The demographic characteristics of the individuals (body weight, age, menstruation termination period, height, other diseases, visual and hearing impairment, etc.) and chronic disease history were collected with personal information form. Fifty community-dwelling older women (mean age 69.30±5.03) were enrolled in the current study. The BMI results of the women were: 34% obese, 34% overweight, 32% normal, and 68% of participants were inactive,%26 inactive, and 6% active. Median and mean length of stay in a rest home were 22(12-49.5) and 32.96±28.30 years. There was a strong positive correlation between body image perception and physical activity (r:0.751,p˂0.001) and a weak negative correlation between BMI (r: -0.398, p: 0.004). No correlation was found between body image and age, length of stay in a rest home, incontinence, depression, fall history (p˃0.05). Healthcare professionals should plan that postmenopausal women regulate their calorie intake and encourage them to become more active in both recreational and muscle strength. Researchers could be encouraged to examine both functional and appearance-related body image with postmenopause elderly populations.

This study was conducted to evaluate the successful aging levels of nursing home residents.This descriptive study was conducted based on Rowe and Kahn’s model. The following was used to obtain data from the participants; Personal Well-Being Index-Adult, Katz Index, Standardized Mini-Mental State Examination, Social Connectedness Scale, Timed Up and Go Test, Berg Balance Scale and Handgrip Strength Test.Participants’ mean scores of Personal Well-Being Index-Adult, Katz Index of Independence in Activities of Daily Living, Standardized Mini-Mental State Examination, Social Connectedness Scale, Timed Up and Go Test, Berg Balance Scale were found to be 51.68±18.60, 5.53±1.38, 23.57±3.02, 25.23±8.89, 16.10±8.81 and 43.48±17.23, respectively.Participants had chronic disease incidence and diabetes, adversely affected successful aging and physical functionality, respectively. Participants also had the following characteristics: vulnerable cognitive functionality, high fall risk, above average personal well-being that may positively affect aging in terms of life engagement, and social connectedness.

Aging brings along a series of musculoskeletal problems due to physiological changes. Many elderly people experience functional loss due to musculoskeletal problems. The demand for complementary, clinically effective, safe, patient-acceptable and, cost-effective therapeutic methods to reduce or partially prevent these losses is increasing day by day. Pilates is an exercise method that has beneficial effects on some health factors that are lost with aging. It is stated that it can strengthen the body against the difficulties it may encounter by strengthening the core stabilizing muscles around the pelvis and spine and improving the breathing pattern. It has been reported that Pilates has positive effects on posture, balance and fall risk, flexibility, strength, body composition and functional autonomy indicators for the advanced age group. In this review, the evidence of these most frequently studied effects of Pilates training in the elderly group is summarized in the light of the current literature.

Background: Aim of the study determine the duration of mobile phone use on handgrip strength and thumb flexion muscle strength. Materials and method: The measurements were taken from hand dynamometer for handgrip strength and manual muscle tester for thumb flexion muscle strength. The means of the right and left handgrip strength, thumb flexion muscle strength were measured. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in height and weight measurements between genders (p<0.05). We found as using of mobile phone increased, hand strength increased. However, the highest value of thumb muscle strength on the right and left sides was observed to be over 8 hours. There was a high relation between gender and muscle strength measurements (p<0.05; r=0.700). Conclusion: This study revealed that the duration of mobile phone use has an effect on grip and thumb flexion muscle strength.
