As Ciências Sociais exibem muitas discussões acerca da teoria do Estado, que remontam aos autores clássicos do campo da Filosofia Política, além dos pensadores que fundam a Ciência Política moderna. Quando refletimos sobre a importância dos clássicos para as Ciências Sociais, deparamo-nos com a atualidade de suas concepções, sendo imperiosa sua leitura para as novas gerações. Por isso, torna-se pertinente estudar as contribuições da crítica política de Karl Marx para a teoria do Estado. Esse artigo fará um percurso analítico, abordando brevemente a teoria do Estado de Max Weber para colocá-la em contraste com a crítica política do pensamento de Marx, até compreender a teoria do Estado em obras selecionadas deste autor. Quanto aos resultados, apontamos para a contraposição entre as concepções de Estado de Weber e Marx; percebemos que a teoria do Estado de Marx não é linear, tendo mudanças ao longo de suas obras; e destacamos que, com o passar do tempo, Marx parte de uma concepção mecânica para uma compreensão do Estado mais dinâmica e dialética. Por fim, a crítica política de Marx nos leva a concluir que, mesmo havendo uma autonomia relativa, o Estado ainda pode ser objeto de controle por parte da classe dominante.
