Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a associação entre a severidade da cárie dentária e os fatores sociodemográficos e comportamentais de higiene bucal. Metodologia: Realizou-se um estudo transversal e analítico com 300 crianças de 12 anos, de um município de pequeno porte em Pernambuco. Utilizou-se o Índice de Higiene Oral Simplificado e os critérios de cárie dentária da Organização Mundial de Saúde. Os dados foram coletados por um único examinador, devidamente calibrado (k= 0,92). As crianças e seus pais responderam a um formulário. Para verificar a associação entre a severidade de cárie dentária e as demais variáveis investigadas, realizou-se a regressão de Poisson, considerando o p˂0,05. Resultados: A experiência da doença correspondeu a 74,3% dos escolares, sendo o CPO-D igual a 2,6. Nenhuma variável sociodemográfica mostrou associação com a severidade da doença.
