Sonographic measurements allow accurate determination of splenic volume. Estimating splenic volume with the formula 0.524 x W x T x (ML + CCL) / 2 provides the greatest overall accuracy.
The purpose of this study was to establish the normal dimensions of the thyroid gland in euthyroid neonates. Ultrasonographic evaluation of the thyroid gland was performed in the first week of life in 68 term neonates whose gestational ages at birth were 37 to 41 weeks and whose birth weights ranged from 2570 to 4790 g. Measurements of the thyroid lobes were done in transverse, anteroposterior, and longitudinal planes. All neonates had ageappropriate thyroid s timulating hormone levels at birth. Mean ± 2 standard deviations for thyroid volume were 472 mm 1 nnd 1430 mm\ The mean measurements for the sum of both lobes for transverse, L ittle information is available regarding the value of thyroid sonography in neonates owing to failure to establish standards for normal neonatal thyroid size. 1l1is prospective study was done to determine the range of values for normal ABBREVIATIONS

The purpose of thisstudywasto determinethevalueof reinterpreting abdom inal CT performed at other institutions when assessing the resectability of pancreatic carcinoma. MATERIALSAND METHODS. Fifty-threepatients(30 men,23 women;meanage,62 years)referredto our tertiarycareinstitutionwith newly diagnosedpancreaticcarcinomahad formally reinterpreted abdominal CT scans and available initial reports. CT was performed at communityhospitals(,i = 47), universityhospitals(n = 4), an outpatientclinic (n = I ), andan imaging center (n = I ); reinterpretation was performed by university radiologists with subspe cialty expertise in abdominal imaging. On the basis of the initial and reinterpretation reports, the patients were categorized as having resectable or nonresectabledisease. Medicare reim bursement rateswere assessed.RESULTS. The initial and reinterpretationreportsagreedin 36 (68%) of the 53 patients, with the diseaseof 16 patientsconsideredresectableand 20 unresectable by both reports. In 17 patients (32%), we found discrepancies between the initial and the reinterpretation reports. All discrepancies involved the initial report indicating resectability and the reinterpretation re port consistent with nonresectable disease. Discrepancies were resolved by findings at surgery
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
