En reprenant une hypothèse vite écartée par H. S. Versnel en 1980, suggérant que le Lapis Satricanus puisse être le premier exemple historique d'un ver sacrum, cette recherche voudrait en premier lieu préciser et restituer ce contexte archaïque aux études magistrales de J. Heurgon sur le ver sacrum, en valorisant le témoignage des sources sur une colonisation de Publius Valesius Publicola et l'opération du census durant son consulat en 508. Nous avançons l'hypothèse que les suodales du Publius Valesius de l'inscription aient pu être une classe d'âge à leurs premières armes, recrutée lors de l'opération du census. En effet, le mot lacunaire (IUN)IEI peut signifier un groupe de jeunes gens tout aussi bien qu'il peut désigner un gentilice. La colonie de Publicola aurait été installée à Satricum où un témoignage d'époque atteste les suodales du consul. Le maillage uniforme de camps militaires et l'homogénéité des lots signalés pour quelques-unes de ces «colonies» connues sous le nom de priscae coloniae latinae depuis l'époque royale sont des traits caractéristiques de cette forme de colonisation qui vont se fondre dans la colonisation de type romain. Cette colonisation militaire est sans doute plus répandue que celle vraisemblablement issue du ver sacrum, qui reste une mesure exceptionnelle strictement liée à l'opération du census et à l'enrôlement des recrues à leurs premières armes.
