Sickle cell disease (SCD) affects over 30,000 students in the United States. Central nervous system complications are widespread among students with SCD and include stroke, silent cerebral infarction, and cognitive impairment. The effects of these complications may lead to academic failure, limited career options, and for some, total disability. Despite studies describing the significant academic and cognitive impact of sickle cell disease, reports describing interventions are limited. There is a lack of awareness among educators of the academic risks associated with sickle cell disease and a lack of appropriate resource allocation. The school nurse, as community health advocate, will be called upon to bridge the gap among healthcare providers, parents, students, and educators. This article provides a review of both recent and landmark studies describing the cognitive and academic impact of sickle cell disease and discusses the role of the school nurse as an advocate, liaison, and educator.

Background
A culturally appropriate nutrition education pamphlet was developed and validated for low-literacy caregivers in Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala.
Methods
The pamphlet was developed after a preliminary survey of pediatric oncology nurses in the 3 countries to assess the need for education materials, caregiver literacy levels, and local eating habits. Experts in nutrition and low-literacy patient education and nurses validated the pamphlet’s content and design.
Results and Conclusions
Nurses expressed the need for nutrition-related pamphlets in developing countries. The pamphlet was validated positively by experts and nurses and has been circulated to pediatric oncology caregivers in Central America.
A recent clinical research study with a case study approach is used to illustrate the importance of translational research in the role of the advanced practice nurse. The case study module used in this column is "Adverse Drug Events in the Emergency Department: Why Genetics Matters in Practice." The study results showed that patients taking multiple drugs metabolized through the cytochrome P450 enzyme system had a higher prevalence of drug-drug exposure. These drug-drug exposures may lead to potentially serious drug-drug interactions. The implications and clinical relevance of these findings for advance practice nurses are discussed.
