-This experiment assessed the effect of feed restriction in rabbits on performance and economic viability of the activity. Sixty New Zealand White rabbits, weaned at 33 days and slaughtered at 81 days of age, were used. The design was of randomized blocks with four treatments and five replications. The treatments were, as follows: 1 -free feeding, 2 -feed restriction from 35 to 40 days of age (50 g/d/rabbit), 3 -feed restriction from 54 to 61 days of age (90 g/d/rabbit) and 4 -feed restriction from 33 to 40 days (50 g/d/rabbit) and from 54 to 61 days of age (90 g/d/rabbit). There was no difference in the performance and carcass parameters, indicating that there was compensatory growth in the rabbits that suffered feed restriction. The best gross margin was obtained with feed restriction from 54 to 61 days age. Feed restriction in growing rabbits can be adopted at different ages because it does not interfere negatively in the performance and carcass parameters. In two periods and from 51 to 61 days, feed restriction was more economically viable for the sale of live and slaughtered rabbits, respectively.

ResumoObjetivou-se avaliar os efeitos da inclusão de virginiamicina (VM) em dois níveis, ao suplemento proteico-energético para bovinos de corte em crescimento com dieta a base de gramínea tropical no período seco do ano. Foram constituídos três tratamentos: tratamento controle, apenas Suplemento Mineral COMIGO -Produção -F.10 proteico-energético (SPE); tratamento virginiamicina 100 (VM 100), SPE + 108 mg de (Phigrow®) VM/animal/dia e tratamento virginiamicina 200 (VM 200), SPE + 216 mg de (Phigrow®) VM/animal/dia. As variáveis analisadas foram o consumo de suplemento (CSPE), ganho médio diário (GMD), medidas biométricas e escore de condição corporal (ECC) no experimento 1 e o consumo médio diário de suplemento (CSM), pH ruminal, nitrogênio amoniacal, degradabilidade ruminal in situ da matéria seca (MS), da fibra em detergente acido (FDN) e da fibra em detergente neutro (FDA) no experimento 2. Não houve diferença estatística para GMD, CSPE e para medidas biométricas (P>0,05), GMD para VM 200 de 0,431; VM 100 de 0,391 e controle de 0,398 kg/ animal/dia. Não houve diferença significativa (P>0,05) do pH ruminal, da concentração de nitrogênio amoniacal e das variáveis analisadas na degradabilidade ruminal in situ da MS, da FDN e da FDA. A virginiamicina veiculada no SPE para bovinos de corte sob pastejo pode promover a variação de consumo, não promoveu efeitos significativos nos valores do pH ruminal e do nitrogênio amoniacal e não demonstram efeitos significativos sobre a degradabilidade da MS, FDN e FDA. The chemical composition of Santa Inês sheep colostrum was evaluated, as well as chilled milk (zero to 240 hours) and frozen milk for up to 70 days. Results of chemical composition (fat, protein, casein, lactose, total and degreased dry extract) and colostrum somatic cell count (SCC) were presented descriptively. The results of chemical composition and SCC and total bacterial count (TBC) of chilled and frozen milk were evaluated in a completely randomized design, the repetition of milk collection days and the treatments of the times when the milk was chilled and frozen. The comparison of the quality averages of chilled and frozen milk was performed by Tukey test, with a probability of 5.0 %. Santa Inês sheep colostrum showed high protein and fat content, demonstrating a high source of nutrients for lamb nutrition. Santa Inês sheep’s milk can be stored for up to 240 hours without changes in chemical quality. Frozen milk from Santa Inês ewes for up to 70 days minus fat content; however, this form of milk preservation is viable. Refrigeration and freezing are alternatives that add value to the milk of Santa Inês ewes, but studies with previous preservation methods are necessary for greater quality assurance.

This study aimed at assessing the physicochemical and microbiological quality of feedlot-finished, culled Santa Inês ewes and Moxotó goats, and compares the intake, weight gain and carcass characteristics. Three Santa Inês ewes and Moxotó goats with similar ages were confined in double and/or individual pens and then euthanized after 40 days of confinement. The average intake, daily weight gain, hot carcass yield, cold carcass yield, weight loss by cooling and rib eye area (94.45%, 0.220 kg/day, 41.37%, 40.14%, 2.99%, 16.1 cm², respectively) of the Santa Inês ewes were higher than that of the Moxotó goats (84.01%; 0.06 kg/day; 41.55%; 39.81%; 4.12%; and 11.35 cm², respectively). The chevon (goat meat) showed higher protein levels (23.09 g/100 g), lower lipid levels (1.43 g/100 g) and higher red-color intensity (11.62), although it had lower tenderness (8.98 kgf shear strength). The superiority of the culled ewes was assessed relative to that of the culled goats, and the results showed that the Santa Inês sheep has better performance than the Moxotó goats. However, mutton and chevon derived from the culled animals are promising alternatives for small farmers because culled meats add value to the standard meat obtained from these animals, broaden sales alternatives and increase profitability.
